Mr, E. K Peterson, Acting Dis­ trict Forester in charge of the Southern Oregon area, states tha^ Jackson County, with an aggre­ gate credit of $100,052.53, ranked second among the recipients of O A C. funds. Douglas County was first with $253,709 88; Lane Coun­ ty third and Josephine County fourth. The gross receipts of the O. * C. Administration are pooled, and then 50 per cent is divided among the counties according to the pro- portion of the total valuation of O Ik C. lands that existed in each county in 1910 the year the lands revested to the Department of the Interior from the Oregon and Cal­ ifornia i (now Southern Pacific) Railroad For the past five years the O. * C. has been making an additional payment of 25 per cent for back taxes accrued prior to 1937 The 1943 payments have liquidated this obligation. Hence­ forth, 25 per cent will accrue to the Federal Treasury. The re­ maining 25 per cent is available for administration of the O. & C lands, including protection from fire which is contracted to the State of Oregon Forestry Depart-I merit. Forming one of the nation's largest testing grounds for scien­ tific forest management, timber cutting as required by congres­ sional mandate, is conducted on a \ sustained yield basis which stip­ ulates that no more timber shall be cut each year than can be replaced by natural growth.
