APPEASEMENT, UNDER THE GUISE OF FEEDING
HUNGRY EUROPE, IS NO GO!
With more and more being heard about feeding the
‘"starving millions” of Europe, big-hearted Uncle Sam
is being given the touch again and expert international
panhandlers—among them several of our own promin-
ents— are putting on the pressure. Sob-stories, gush-
gush sentimental persuasion and other smoke-screen
tactics are being employed to awaken within the char
acteristically soft American heart a spirit of sweet
generosity and meddling.
Answering England s accusation that such feed-
Europe plans would break the British blockade and
help the totalitarian powers win the war, the appease
ment group argues that food and clothing would be
sent there to be distributed only under strictest rules
guaranteeing that the nazis would not divert them to
their own use, or drain off domestic foodstuffs in place
of them.
But as far as rules are concerned, no matter how
pretty-sounding they may be, we must remember that
they mean nothing to Hitler. Promises? Where has
belief in them led the democracies except to their own
slaughter?
The American people, in their own self-interest, are
pledged to a policy of increasing assistance to Britain,
