ADD WRESTLING
TO JULY 4 SHOW
Wrestling fans of southern Ore­
gon and northern California will
be treated to a special holiday
all-star card by Promoter Mack
Idllard in Ashland's outdoor thea­
ter in Llthia park Thursday eve­
ning. July 4. according to an­
nouncement yesterday.
Lillard gave the celebration
committee assurance
that he
would bring his mat matadors to
Ashland for the independence day
celebration and indicated that he
would search coast circles for the
year's most outstanding card.
First match will get under way
at 8 p.m. July 4, with two other
outstanding matches to follow.

indicated
that
Prince Mehalikis. a well known
wrestler, probably will give a div-
iAg exhibition at Twin Plunges on
that day, including his famous
fire dive and other unusual feats.
The celebration plans are shap­
ing up rapidly, with the Cavalcade
of the Siskiyou, gigantic pageant
with a cast of 400 people, ad­
vancing ahead of schedule while
parade plans, rodeo arrangements
and other feature attractions are
assuring Ashland of the greatest
celebration in the city's history.
Wooden nickels, to advertise the
three-day event, should be ready
for distribution within a few days
and will furnish a novel publicity
break for the show.

weeks period went into effect

edy of Errors," both holdovers
from last year, along with "The

supporting characterizations for
"Much Ado About Nothing " Di­

Diplomas from U of 0
A record number of University
of Oregon students, 771 in all, of
whom 14 are from Jackson coun­
ty, received diplomas and certifi­
cate*« at an impressive ceremony
Sunday evening, June 9. when the
Institution held its 63rd annual
commencement exercises in Mc­
Arthur court.
Earle C. Canfield of Ashland
received a bachelor of arts de­
gree in arts and letters. A bache­
lor of science degree in business
administration was conferred on
Veada Ruth Hardy. daughter of
Mr. and Mrs. P. R. Hardy. Miss
Hardy is affiliated with Delta
Delta Delta sorority.
Alice Mary Coggins of Ashland
received a bachelor of science de­
gree in music. A bachelor of
science degree in education was
conferred on Earl W. Rogers, Ash­
land, and Charlotte Wolters re­
ceived a BA in music. Other stud­
ents from Ashland who received
degrees were James C. Voss,
Frank D. Van Vliet and Margaret
Miuise Knox. Voss is the son of
Mr. and Mrs. Henry H. Vow, and
the recipient of a bachelor of
science degree in business admin­
istration. Van Vliet, son of Mr.
and Mrs. Frank D. Van Vliet and
a member of Kappa Sigma fra­
ternity, received a bachelor of
science degree in economics. A
bachelor of arts degree in English
was conferred on Miss Knox, who
is a member of Pot and Quill,
women's creative writing honor­
ary, and the daughter of Walter
F. Knox of Ashland.

A FTER drilling through 228 feet
of cement-like dirt and hard
rock at the city-owned lithia water
property. Robert Burns and Ru­
dolph Kuhn, drillers for F. J.
Bumham. lessee of the property,
struck a big gas gusher Monday
and were treated to sight of gas
and lithia water shooting skyward
to a height of 28 feet
The gusher, showing a decided
increase in pressure and quantity
over two other wells previously
drilled on the property about three
miles from the city limits, shoots
water through a six-inch casing
without use of a two-inch choke
which had been used in the first

Bumham, who has leased
property from Ashland for a per-

that it is his belief, after close
observation of the three wells and

ther exploration, a 15 or 20-ton
plant for the manufacture of dry
ice and converting of the gas to
liquid carbonic used in making
aerated waters, will be construct­
ed by Bumham

NEW playground program,
supervised and directed by
Eleanor Coombe and Leighton
Blake, will get under way Monday
morning, June 17, at the play­
grounds in Lithia park and will
continue for duration of the sum­
mer.
Children under 12 years will
meet in the playgrounds in the
park mornings between 10 and
11:45 o’clock and in the afternoons
between 1 and 5 o’clock to engage
in planned activities including
play on apparatus, low organized
games as marbles, hopscotch,
horseshoes, basketball and goal
shooting, and bean-bag games, and
will enjoy a story hour in the
early afternoon.
Girls over 12 years of age will
meet in the park between 1:30
and 4 p. m. and under the tutelage
of Miss Coombe will take part in
archery.

age to go from the playground to
the swimming pools between the
hours of 4 and 5 p. m in a sup­
ervised group where instruction
will be given to beginners. Ac­
cording to Blake, as soon as pos­
sible other activities and some
practical, inexpensive craftwork
will be added to the program.
The new playground program
will run Mondays through Fridays
and supervision will be provided
in the park from 10 to 11:45 a m.
Saturdays. All children are urged
to attend and make use of this
recreational opportunity.
