1X/T of sour notes developed
on the local baseball diamond
.Sunday afternoon when Medford
wrung a victory out of Axhland-
Talent during a dripping after-
noon, but none (it them came from
the grandstand, where Harry Mey
ers and his Talent high school
band was busy blowing enthus
iasm into the day.
Their huffing and puffing added
a lot to the game and had it not
been for the busy musicians, there
would have been times when the
hours dragged. When the fray wan
called for a passing shower, the
band dug in and blew plenty
pretty.
A
The sur* rising part of
Meyers' contribution, Talent
folks proudly relate, is that a
few short months ago none
of the bund member« knew
whether you played music on
a horn or ¡toured kerosene into
lamps through 'em. The near
est thing to a drummer they
had was u kid who had rat
tled sticks on picket fences,
and the clarinet player had
to is- baited with lollypops so
he could tell where his lips
went. But that was last fall,
when Harry first took over at
Talent.

Bulldog Jackson and
Carter Are Billed As
Top Event Monday
Bulldog Jackson, nationally fam
ous meanie and hammerlock art
ist, will meet Marshall Carter in
the top main event of Mack Lil
lard's weekly mat program in the
Medlord armory Monday night.
Carter holds two straight wins
over world champion Bob Kennas-
ton and should prove a good test
for Jackson, who defeated Pete
Belcaslro in his only Medford ap
pearance last week.
Carter is from the University of
Missouri where he taught wrest
ling and was assistant football
couch He is a clean grappler but
also is a master of the rough stuff
when his opponent wants it that
way, as Jackson probably will.
Dick Trout, the San Diego air
plane spin artist, will face a new
comer in the person of Sammy
Kohen of New York in the middle
bout. Kohen is a well-built physi
cal culture "fiend” and is reported
to be a clean and scientific wrest
ler. He has just arrived in the
United States from a very suc
cessful tour of South America.
Another newcomer, Jim Spencer
from Boston, gets the call in the
opening bout against Vem Clark
of Michigan who returns to Med-
al L ob Angele« lightweight and
Dave Lefty of San Francisco left
for Australia where they will par
ticipate in a series of matches.
Shumway had several fights in
Ashland, most of them in the old
Eagles hall. The speed with which
he struck his blows and his ef
fective left uppercut combined
with his dynamite right cross fell
ed many opponents. The speed
with which he disposed of Bill
Coleman, veteran sparring partner
of Gene O’Grady, in one round is
still remembered by the Ashland
fans of the cauliflower industry.
Shumway deserted the local in
stitution for University of Idaho
where he was a star member of
the boxing team. Later he moved
to San Francisco where he was
married. A fight with Harry Ca
hill in the Dreamland auditorium
of that city took just about all the
fight out of Tiger John but he
decided revenge would be sweet
and pinned Cahill’s ears back in
their next bout. Since then he has
been enjoying splendid success in
northern California rings.

Clark will be remembered as the
guy who took some of the mean

Spencer is 2H years old, weighs
190 pounds and comes direct from
Loe Angeles. He is reported to be
slightly rough.
