But if our present legislative session is a fair cross section of democracy, heaven help those peoples who must live under a worse rule! With better housing problems, business stagnation, unemployment, labor troubles, a pooped-out merchant marine on our hands and a thousand and one other vital posers needing attention, what do the American people get for their money? A filibuster. Hot air. Evasion. Not that we blame the southern senators at all for their determined fight to prevent the anti-lynching bill ever becoming law. But the rub comes when addle- brained representativa of the Dear Peepul purposely bring up such controversial and unimportant legisla tion at a time when the nation needs statesmanship. What difference will it make to the millions of trou bled Americans whether a dozen negroes will be hanged in the old south this year for rape? With opportunity on every hand for able leader ship, useful action, our senators—who keep their nos trils pointed skyward until near election time—blat their brains out and -clutter up congress with a bier wind. 6 The special session was bad enough. Battey of the National Safety council. The rate rose nine per cent last year but is on the decline again this year, despite greatly increased travel. However, in going to some length, he overlooked the prime requisite of brevity. To the Editor: Your editorial comments of last Friday’s issue are to be com mended. They show courage and repentance. The life of a news paper man, especially hi a small city, is not as rosy as some might suppose or wish In a socio-po litical order which is of a topsy turvy nature, unpleasant things continually are arising that are hard to account for or in any way to be reconciled. In a people whose mentality is fogged with and whose past is clouded with the star dust of Mars and reeking with the stench of hoodlumism an effort at correction is ax the voice of one crying in the wilderness, saying “Repent and turn away from your wicked ways.” To one who sees the end from the begin ning, efforts at reform look hope less. No wonder that Jesus tells us "Ye must be born again." The first time I read the Town send plan I said “This is an effort to reform capitalism.” Looking at it four years later, I assert that if capitalism refused to be re formed, I reverently say God help and pity the capitalists Have you ever read the general welfare act? ... If you have, you will never mention the word vis ionary in connection with the Townsend movement. . . . The political democracy of which we boast is better called demo-plutocracy, or rule of the soothing voice of Pluto, god of the underworld. It is no wonder that society, thus deceived, has a hell of a time. The reformer and revolutionist, especially the latter, has a lot of suffering to undergo. However, it is worth it and is good for the soul.
