But don’t blame the average banker of the average community for that The trouble is, that the "rugged individualist" banket has become almost a trad ition of the ¡>axt Most applicat ions tor loans now have to be sub mitted to a "board" in some dis tant city. Even here in Oregon the "sys tem" is gaining ground. It's get ting to be scarcely "news” any more to read that another bank has been taken over by some big Portland institution. And that big institution is probably hooked up with some other big institution which in turn is dominated by Wall Street. The House of Morgan and the House of Rockefeller have long arms. And those arms are reaching, reaching! Among recent news items is one to the effect that fifteen hun dred big industrialists of the na tion have joined in opposition to the New Deal and in a movement to defend the cause of "rugged in dividualism.” Of course! Also, to be sure! But folks are not going to forget that it took only about 10 yeurs of "rugged individualism" to bring on the worst depression this country has ever known. Nor that a good part of that period the loudest looter for "rugged in dividualism" this country has ever known was at the helm of the good old Ship of State. The China Clipper, giant flying boat, completed the first round trip flight over the trans-Paciflc airmail route. It marked an epoch in transportation and some day real giant flying ships will be car rying the commerce of the world. The China Clipper will get out of date just as the sailing clippers got out of date and the steam boats are going to get out of date. "Time sUll dreams of man's div ine advance." Two defeats of the sales tax ought to have been broad enough hints to the legislature that Ore gon has no use for that obnoxious nuisance. And tacking it to a mea ger old age pension provision does not make it any less obnoxious Maybe when the "third strike" is called, future legislatures will rea- Llize that the sales tax is out. M. Williams The public hearing at which City Recorder J. Q. Adams was to have been given an oportunity to show cause why the office of city recorder should not be declared vacant ,and which was to have been held Thursday night, has been postponed until next Monday night. The announcement of postpone ment was made Wednesday morn ing by Mayor T. S. Wiley, after receiving a request for such action from Mr Adams on account of the illness of the latter .who had not been able to be at his office Tues day. A resolution charging the city recorder with alleged carelessness and inattention to his duties, and citing him to show cause why the office should not be declared vac ant, was adopted by the city coun cil at a meeting held Tuesday night of last week. At that time Mr. Adams demanded a public hearing. He declared that the charges would be fully and com- pletely answered by documentary evidence. While the city council unani mously adopted the resolution for a hearing, it must not be inferred that such action is utter proof that the charges against the city recorder can, or should be, sus tained. The hearing on those charges is yet to be held. Opinion should not run rampant unul both sides are fully heard. Let the hear ing decide and then let there be peace.
