As a matter of fact, Willamette university cedevi to the state the grounds upon which the capitol stood. The acquirement of the Willamette campus would keep the state capitol building in the group of the other state buildings, the whole forming a com plete and coherent set-up. The purchase of the campus would not necessitate the rebuilding at the expense of the state other buildings, which would have to be built around the mother building. It would of course necessitate the purchase from the Willamette university board of trustees at a prob able cost of $2,500.000 According to those who are familiar with the possible sites, it is the consensus of opinion that such a procedure would be the most advantageous ----------------- •------------------ THAT TAX SALE PHONE ASHLAND 70 Subscription Rates, in Advance: One Year_______ $1.00 Six Month................50c - - ------------ — . - — THE STATE CAPITOL Where Oregon's proposed new capitol building will be located is still a matter of conjecture How ever, the possibilities are rather few Public opinion in Oregon would decidedly be against the removing of the copitol to another site in Oregon. Tradition, custom and heritage have centered the capitol in Salem and the people would not have it moved. Too, Salem is close enough to the center of the state, at least as far as the largest number of people is concerned, and is only six and a half or seven hours drive from Ashland. The first possibility to be considered would be that of rebuilding the state building directly on the site of its former occupancy. However, here we have to consider the lack of building room. The capitol grounds are only one block in length north and south and three blocks east and west. Back of the destroyed state capitol stands the state office building and the supreme court building. Across 12th street lies the agricultural building. From the site of the razed capitol to Winter street is only about a block and a half Hardly enough room for the erection of a modern substantial build ing which must answer the requirements of a capitol. Then too. there would be no room for ex pansion. Other buildings which will naturally come during the remaining years will have to be placed in some other section of the town or removed to other parts of Oregon. Another viewpoint, which is well taken, is to ac quire from Willamette university the 14 acres upon which the campus stands. Willamette university Saturday, August 24. is the date set by the county court for the tax sale. At the time the date for the sale was set there were 650 pieces to be sold. Originally there were 1162 piece’s slated for sale, but many owners have paid enough money to secure their properties from being sold. Under the new law passed in 1935 any land holder who makes a 10 per cent payment on de linquent taxes back of 1930 can save his land from foreclosure. It is said that many landowners whose taxes are delinquent are not aware of the new law. If that is a fact there should be a move to spread the news. There should be as few foreclosures for taxes as possible. ----------------- •------------------ “Only plain speaking can save us from a repe tition of the fateful blunders of 20 years ago," says Lord Robert Cecil of England. And how hard it is for diplomats to say what they mean and mean what they say. Action on the drastic war profits bill has been postponed until the next session of congress. Of course nobody is going to think even for a moment that the strenuous lobby supported by munitions makers had anything whatever to do with such action. ---------------—•-------------- — Pear picking and packing is scheduled to begin Monday. So says the U. S. Biological Sur vey tn summarising new migratory bird treaty act regulations an nounced today by the U. S. De partment of Agriculture. Recom mended by the biological survey and adopted by R. G. Tugwell as acting secretary of agriculture, the regulations were adopted in a proc lamation by President Roosevelt on July 30. The new regulations, says the biological survey, are based on the necessity of having a net annual increase left over at the end of the shooting season until the de pleted population of migratory waterfowl is restored to normal. This year's rigid restrictions which follow a period of approximately 35 years during which the kill each year has exceeded the annual in crease from breeding arc summar ised by the bureau as follows: Those species which are nearest the danger point of extinction, such as canvasbacks and redheads, will be particularly favored by the elimination of sink-boxes, sneak boats, and open water shooting, practices which have been the chief methods of taking these species.
