A petition is being prepared by a num ber of women of the East Bide, and will be In circulation In a few days, asking that the City Council take some step In the matter of clearing the sidewalks on Bumside street, between Second and Third streets, Ths petition recites that women who reside on the East Side of the river in the vicinity of the Burnside bridge are obliged to cross at some other bridge on. account of the large number of men who congregate in front of the Burnside street resorts, making' it neces sary In a large number of cases, espec ially at night,' for 'people to walk out in the street before they can get past the block. The petition also claims that most of the men who stand In front of such places use very disgusting language, unfit even for a newsboy to hear. One of the leaders of the movement said: "I think that there ought to be a law passed by the City Council to keep tha streets in front of the North End resorts cleared. With such a law the police -could see to It that no rough cbaracters lounge around the street and on the side walks. If we can't get this measure through, there Is some talk of asking the City Council to put the resorts on back thoroughfares. The reason why there is not suah a heavy travel on the Burnside bridge vs not because the pop ulation there la ajiy sparrer than around the other bridgesv but because the women and children are afraid to pass those places on Burnside street." The women say theft the police will not render them any assistance. GAVE UP COMMISSION. ' "Yes; I finally succeeded In getting re lieved from the office of postmaster at Sheridan," said Q. W. Bibee to a Journal reporter this morning. Mr. Blbee had JuBt arrived down- from Oregon City, where he is making arrangements to take possession of the United States Land Office, as receiver. "The statement has been published that I had already taken charge of the office," continued he, "and I wish it to be under stood that I have not yet taken on any official garb. The change will not take place until next Tuesday. v True enough. I have been id Oregon City a few days arranging matters preparatory to taking the place, and will move my family down from Sheridan some time next week. "My office at Sheridan was turned over to my bondsmen and my commission was revoked," said Mr. Blbee, "and the bondsmen have appointed J. R. Sanders, but his appointment has pot yet been confirmed. "There is something peculiar about these appointments. Some men will try for years to get a. commission from the government to hold some place of trust. and many times experience all kinds of disappointment. With me, for some time past, it has been a Question of getting rid of a commission. This has worried1 me more than the fact of becoming In possession of another commission." There was some misunderstanding with the bondBmen of Mr. Blbee, and. for some reason an agreement could not be reached by them to recommend the appointment of anybody, but Mr. Sanders seems to have been lucky in having the plum tum ble into his hand. Woodworkers' Strike Not Off. PORTLAND, July ll-(To The Journal). Owing to the statements made in your paper regarding the stability of our union, we feel that it is our duty towards organized labor, as well as the public, to state the situation as it now stands. The withdrawal of the boycott by tho Building Trades Council does not affect our strike in the- way it is generally un derstood, for It must not be forgotten by those who form opinions on this sub.'ect, that, on the night of May 2, 1902, the Fed erated Trades Council, which is composed of three representatives of each union in this city, voted unanimously on a mo tion declaring the six planing mills un fair, as well as their products, and, through a resolution, 400 letters, wers mailed to different central bodies and organizations throughout the United States notifying them to that effect, and until we come to an agreement with the said planing mills they will remain on the unfair list. Be it further known that the woodwok- have not tone.to work in uut.nr mills, excepting a small percentage who have been frightened by the action taken by the carpenters' union. Motor Broke Down. Passengers on the 6 o'clock motor of the St. Johns railroad were considerably de layed yesterday morning by the break ing of a brake on the motor while., the train was at St. Johns. A number of. the passengers had to be at their work at 7 o'clock, so they started to walk to town. After about an hour's delay the brake was temporarily repaired and. pro ceeded on Its down tpwn trip. The com pany had to run two motors to make up the loss In time. Car of Immigrants Coming. M. A. Leslie," of University Park, has received a letter from a Kansas real es tate firm , asking; that some descriptive pamphlets of Oregon' be sent- to them. The letter, states that they receive a large number of Inquiries about this sta(e. They already have arranged for a carload of Immigrants to Oregon this fall. " . .
