The explosion of countless firecrackers metaphorically blew away all real estate deals. The fact that yesterday was a legal holiday naturally out down the snowing in tne matter of both transfers and building permits. v It should be an evidence of congratula tion that quite a number of mortgages Vre released of record on Thursday. That these were largely for small mort gages, running from Y130 upward, shows that laboring people are getting the debt lifted from their homes. A brief mention of what Is doing- In the way of building permits Is of Interest. Two two-story dwellings are being- erect ed by Harriet Hager at the corner of East Davis and East Thirteenth streets, to cost 84000. S. U Brown has taken out a permit for repairs at Fourth and Alder streets. for 12000. R. and F. Bo lam an. will erect two two. story dwellings at Tenth and Market. which will cost 15000. At First avenue and East Ash Frank Klesner will build a S1000 two-story dwelling. Monday night the Building Trades Council decided to at once remove the boycott on building material, so' that the line distinguishing so-called "fair" and "unfair" building materially has been to tally obliterated. This will have a ten dency to make contractors rush the un finished buildings In their hands through to rapid completion. With this move one impeding cause to progress Is entirely removed. If other Impediments can also be removed soon, 1902 may yet prove the banner season for building operations in Portland. The Journal the other day predicted that the recent great fire on the East Side might, in the end. prove a not un mixed blessing. Already steps are being taken toward rebuilding a portion of the burned district. The old Torpedo Hotel site, at the northwest corner of Haw thorne avenue and East Water street, is to be occupied by'a fine four-story brick building, to be erected by O'Reilly A Burpee. Its dimensions will be 46x110. It will probably be utilized as a hotel by the former lessee of the Torpedo Ho tel, William Eschelberger. The Standard Oil ' Company Is making ready to repair Its 'losses to its property ana proposes to, rebuild Its warehouses, The Em-man building, at East First and Hawthorne avenue, will be rebuilt. It is said that the East Side Lumber Company has decided not to rebuild. The burning out of the spans on the east silo of the Madison-street bridge will, until that structure Is temporarily repaired, as is now being done, tend to Impede the operation of building some what In the territory which looks to that bridge as Its outlet, but In a short time this trouble will be entirely removed.
