V MURDER CHARGE. ;
Nicholas Anderson, the half-breed In
dian, was arraigned before Judge A. F.
Sears, in the State ' Circuit Court, this
morning, charged with tha murder of
George L. Tooley, at Holbrook, April 1
last. He pleaded not guilty.
Tha complaint, charging murder In the
second degree, waa read to Anderson by
Deputy District Attorney John Manning.
Attorney Mendenhall put In a plea of not
guilty for hla client, and Judge Sears set
the caae for trial June 23.
Anderson and Tooley engaged in a fight
at Holbrook. Anderson, who Is said to
have been Intoxicated, stabbed his oppo
nent In the abdomen with a jack-knife.

Two petitions for a franchise for the
West Bide Suburban Railway Com
pany were presented to the City Councl!
yesterday. One was elgned by Arch
bishop Christie and others, and the other
was signed by F. B. Beach, prealdent of
the Board of Trade, and 125 flrme and In
dividuals. The petitions, state that the
ordinance introduced some time ago pro
viding for tha franchise waa Opposed by
tha local lines and the Southern Pacific,
because the proposed Una would compete
in the trafflo between Portland, Hlllaboro

The strike Is over. The messenger boys
are once more In the employ of the
Western Union Telegraph Company, and

About 15 boys went on a strike yester
day for a continuation of the percentage
basis. of wages, Instead of HB per month,
as contemplated by their employers, and
won out. Now there are no more cries of
"scab," and the boys are working.
