Here la Multnomah County( the toroas
that are flghtlng for Chamberlain and
the Cltlsens' ticket were apparently more
active and In better shape to make a
vigorous contest than were those of the
Matthews ticket.
A report was circulated that Mr. Clark,
brother of Senator Clark, last night of
fered (50,000 on Chamberlain, with no
takers. However, a number of beta were
made at even money, the aggregate be
ing approximately $50,000.
Plenty of money was offered on Inman,
and the total of bets on the mayoralty
was about the same as that on the gov
ernorship. . '
The voting began early In most pre
cincts, although. In some there were large
iumbers of men who stood around and
.did not hesitate to ask openly , why he,'
"men with "dough" had not ptit-ln an ap
pearance. These men, so it is understood, were
either directed to go to room 7 in the
building' on Third street opposite the
Chamber of Commerce, or were taken
rare of by precinct strikers who were
stationed at every precinct in the county
by the handlers of Furnish money. It
learned that the distribution of this
toney was not entrusted to Jack Mat
hews, but some of it was In the hands
f Matt Mosgrove, a Furnish man from
Jmatilla County.

The hottest political fight in the city
is raging in precinct No, 4. Second Ward
In this district' the majority of the coler
ed population of the North End vote, be
sides a large number of hangers-on about

From what could be learned the Cit
iiena' ticket Is going to win, although the
contest may be very close.as it was in the
primaries, when the Independent Republic
cans won out by a majority of only nine
votes, estimated on their high man. The
Citizen supporters are putting forth every
effort to overcome this small majority
andturn the tide in their favor, and it is
believed by many conservative ones, such
as DeWUve Kerrigan, that their labors
.have been' successful. ,
The forenoon vote wa light, owing to
the fact the majority of the working
class will not get off to vote until this
afternoon. Bv U o'clock a. m., the total
vote polled in precinct t was 112. The
total registration this year for the pre
cinct Is 490. , .

Everything was very qult at the polls
of the Third Ward precincts.
.There were 193 votes cast in precinct 9
till 1 o'clock today.
In precinct 10, 175 votea Were cast till
1 o'clock. In this, precinct D. H. Thomas
and -Mr. McDonnell acted as Judge and
clec, respectively. Instead of. W. H.
Manning and Mr. Thomas.
iln precinct 11, there were 110 vote cast
till noon. John P. Druss and H. A. Metch
acted aa Judge and cterk. Instead of Wal
ter Norton and John LHoye, the, latter
not appearing at the polls.
There were SI votes cast till noon' la
precinct 12. O. J. Hartman acted as
Judge, Instead of C. 6. Mortimer, and
Frank Grant and L. Baura acted as
clerks, instead of A. W. Bryan and Edw.

In precinct IS. 96 votes were cast till
1:30 o'clock. Including two affidavits. F.
Dunn acted for C. R. Tern pie ton as Judge,
Mr. Templeton being excused.

very strong.

quarters in Portland that indicate an' assured victory for

trict and Weather ford in the First. I predict Chamber

The Indications" op to 13 o'clock were
that a light vote will b& cast In the fifth
Ward. In all previous lections, it has
yone Republican, by subtf antlal majori
ties, Uut the leaders of that party around
the various polling places of the ward
this morning are not very . sanguine a
great victory today. They say that a
light vote is being cast an dif the ticket
is not successful will attribute It to the
feeling., of general apathy prevailing in
the .Republican ranks.

It was unusually quiet at precinct No.
IS this morning at 10:38. All the Judges
were on hand, but had not work enough
to do to keep them employed, one-third
of the time. At that hour but 80 votes
had bean polled. dKwin Maya was cap-
flam ot the Republican forces at this
place, while Lansing Stout was the Clt
lsens' representative. .
Seventy-seven votes had been cast this
morning at 10:45 out ot a total registra
tion of U0. Figuring on this basis, votes
had been, coming In at the rate ot about
J an bear. It was unusually quiet In
that vicinity. Samuel McKee is captain

of 264. There was a little excitement at
this place this morning when Harrison
Hayes appeared before the judges and
requested them to prepare his .- ballot.
They compiled, marking the ballot' as

REPIBLICAN CLAIMS.
Chairman Matthews Says It's Furnish
by Safe Majority,
I feel morally certain that the Republican ticket will
make a clean sweep of the field today. I do not believe
that the majorities will be as great as those given two
years ago. These will be somewhat reduced ; the vote
for Governor will probably be much cut down.
In many of the counties polls have been, made by the
county committeemen. Upon their showing. I base my
estimates. In other counties where-the polls have not'
been made I have based my estimates upon those given me
by the managers there. In order to be radically con-
servative, I have, in every instance, discounted these v
latter estimates fully 50 percent. Yet, iri face "of even
this, I am still confident of a Republican victory. As to
giving figures, I do not care to do that now.
Multnomah County is bound to go Republican. My
estimates for this county are based upon carefully-made
estimates founded upon actual polls,
