STRUCK BY A CAR. But for the rare presence of mind of the motorman-'of one' of the Brooklyn car last evening, H. E. Leavens, an aged man residing at Cascade Locks, would have been killed, or at least seriously Injured. It was about 6 o'clock In the evening, and the heavy traffic for' the day was crossing Morrlsonrstreet bridge, when Mr. Leaven's stepped out from behind one of the large bridge ' supports when one of the Brooklyn cars earns along, knock ing him down. Before the speed of th car could be checked, Mr. Leavens had been dragged along under-the car,for several feet, the car stopping Just as the wheels touched his body. , , ' Mr. Leavens ' owes his life, to the prompt work of the motorman. LOUIS, May 6.-The Circuit Court today denied the Injunctions asked for by the National League Baseball Club to re strain players Harper, Heldrlck and Wal lace, alleged to be under contract With the plaintiff, from playing with the American League club. The Judge held that the contracts be tween this players and the National League club were one-sided and favored the National. He also held that If the. players pre' f erred to play for their present employ ers they have the right to do so; that they are following their chosen calling, selecting their own association,' and en- poylng the gains of their own Industry. "These are the natural rights of free men," said the court, "which cannot be bartered away either by contract or con sent, because of constitutional provi sions." May .-At the beef inquiry today there was but one at torney to represent all of the packers when the proceedings began. One of the first witnesses was J. F. Sultter, a cooler nan for Swlft'f St. Jo seph plant. - He gave damaging testimony against tho packers. He testified (hat when he was a retail butcher he received rebates from Swift; that prices, of meats were fixed by the packing-house managers . at a meeting held one week . in advance; that when any of the packers had Inferior meat a meeting of the managers was held and k concession made to the one holding the meat to get rid of it at any price he could get. , . It was more so to1 the general public, for the last bulletin of the day was that so certain -were- the 'physicians of an Im provement of the patient that there would be no more bulletins tor the night. Up to 10:30 there -was no evidence of col lapse; in fact, the Archbishop at 10:69 talked with hs Secretary. About 11 o'clock, however, the trained nurses who had been In charge at the bedside .noticed a change. Acting - on lnatftidttona, the physicians were telephoned for. At the same time, the Archbishop's two broth era were summoned to the room, as well as a number of priest. It was quickly seen by the physicians that the end was at hand, and In. lesa than a quarter of an hour the prelate was dead. His lost mo ments were peaceful and without suffer ing." y" Many notable church folk were about hU bedside when the end came, An hour before he had closed His eyes in death, It was believed that his recovery was only a question of a short building up of his en feebled body. In fact so favorable had been his condition that the Pope had been advised of his probable early restoration to health, and It tma. not more than two hours after the great prelate had breathed his last that a cablegram waa received from the . Pope . congratulating him on getting, past the stages , of pneumonia safely,- and expressing wishes . for his speedy recovery. ', He was 3 years of age at the time of Ills death. ' ' . The Illness really dates from the end of February r this ' year,' when In going through the Kelly Memorial Chapel, in course of construction at the rear of thr' cathedral, th 'ArchTJlhop toll between some beams and to keep himself from falling -to the floor below he had to hold himself up by the armpits. The strain was very great, and before he recovered from the effe'tfts of the accident he was attacked with pneumonia. FUNERAL FRIDAT. NEW YORK, May .-The funeral of Archbishop Corrigan will occur on Fri day morning at St. Patrick's Church. Cardinal Olbbons, assisted by arch bishops, bishops and clergy will officiate at the solemn requiem high masa. Archbishop Ryan, it is expected, will deliver the funeral oration. The archbishop's remains will be In terred in the vault under the main altar of the Cathedral. Mass was said for the dead this morn ing. The remains were afterward embalmel and will be removed to the Cathedral to night. FREE BATHS Will be Ready for Use Within a Few Weeks. Work on the pontoons for the new Portland free swimming baths is pro gressing rapidly at Supple's shipyard. The bath building, when completed, will consist of four pontoons, 12x100 feet, and a one-story structure about 10 feet In height. Tbe swimming tank will be 100 feet long and SO feet wide, the tank be ing placed between the two pontoons. Each person will be furnished with a separate dressing-room, with a lock and key, and the roomSirtU be furnished with soap and towels. An attendant will look after the comfort of the batheri jifed con duct the affairs if the institution. An observatory tower will be located In the middle of the building, and visitors will be permitted to watch the bathers In the pool. An attendant will also be lo-' cated in the tower to look after the safety of those In bathing. The tank will be so constructed that a depth of 10 feet of water can be se cured, but when tha little ones are bath ing the tank will be raised so that there will be only about three feet of water" In the deepest part of ft. (The baths will bs located near the east end of the Madison-street bridge, about 200 feet out in the stream, a pon toon connecting them with the shore. By placing 'the structurq out in the stream several hundred feet the purer water will be secured. The tanks can be llftedcntirely out of the water, sp that Its floors may be scrubbed and cleaned each evening. Mr. Supple says that the baths will be finished wlthin a few weeks. WARSAW. May .
