WABHINGTON, April .-Seeretary Long this morning cabled Commander Dayton, of the cruiser Chicago. asking for an immediate report giving all details concerning the street and conviction of the Venetian courts of certain, officers and men or hi ship. v- . ,The occasion for the dispatch was the cabled press, report stating tnat several members pf the crew of the United States cruiser Chicago : had been r arrested at Venice and imprisoned for disorderly eon duct upon the streets. , , "The cable said- that their terms of Im prisonment ranged from three -to - four months each, and that Captain Robert P. Wynne, commending the marine guard of the Chicago; Robert B. Ledbetter.' as Istant surgeon of the Chicago; Lieutenant John 8, Doddridge, pf the Chicago, and a marine named Wilfred Langley were the men, sentenced. At their trial in the San Marco Police Court, the prisoners admit ted that they-were intoxicated when the disorders occurred, ctad pleaded that they acted In self-defense when mobbed by the crowd. The Publio Prosecutor demanded a sentence of seven months' Imprison ment for Assistant Surgeon Ledbetter, and sentence of six months' imprison ment, tor the others. It is .understood that the prisoners will pay the. costs of the trial and compensator, the -persons who sustained injuries as a result of their disorderly conduct. Withlngton, cashier of the First National Bank of Portland, died at 10 o'clock this morning at the. Good Samaritan hospital. Mr. Withlngton was born (n Pennsyl vania was 63 years old, and had been connected with the First National Bank for about SO years, His death .was due to a complication of diseases, and he had been ailing for six months. The deceased leaves two daughters and a son. One of his daugh ters is (he wife of General Agent Ab MottS of the Canadian Paclflb, at Victoria. TEXAS TORNADO Twentyffive People Killed, and $100,000 Worth of Prop erty Destroyed. (Scripps-McRae News Association.) FORT WORTH, Texas, April 2.-The tornado which passed over portion of Somervllle County last night killed, in all. about 26 people and destroyed $100, 000 worth of property. At least 200 families ars homeless this morning, Bridges are washed away and roads sre impassable. ' The greatest damage done was at Glen rose, where six were killed, about 40 In. Jured and many houses destroyed. LATE BULLETIN. FORT WORTH, Tex., April 29 (8 P. M.). A bulletin at noon from Glenrose say that one of the injured Is dead and three others are dying.
