His sister Joyce Marie won third place in the same sec tion with the poem ‘‘Plans’’. Jeannie Sauvageau, 7th grade, placed third in her section with her reading of "Little Orphan Annie". Rita Stone tied for third place in another section with the hu morous poem, "Jest Fore Christ mas” . Jimmie Farah, though he did not receive a certificate, won a signal honor in being the only first grade pupil in the entire tournament to reach the finals. He read the poem "An Informa tion Bureau." ♦ Other Barnes students partici pating were: Grant Hedges, 2nd grade, who read ’T h e Owl and the Pussy Cat", and “Jack and Jill”. Mary Lou Rinker, 2nd grade, who read ‘T h e Barnyard Fuss’* and "Grasshopper Green”. Tommy Brown, 5th grade, who read “ Lone Dog". Hazel Cum mings '5th grade, who read "Mrs. Brown*. Gary Chumbley, 1st grade who read "Going Fishing". Transportation and supervision of Barnes School participants were provided by Mr. James E. Becker, principal, Mr. and Mrs. Farah, parents of Jimmie and Mr. Chumbley, father of Gary. Mr. Webb, head of the Bea verton high school speech depart ment said that such a tournament will be held annually from now on. One of the high lights of the occasion was a speech demonstra tion by high school students of Mr. Webb’s classes. There were two orations, poetry reading and humorous selections. HAZELDALE-COOPER MT. — The girls of Mrs. Doty’s Sunday School class and Mrs. Santoro’s class, with the help of their tea chers, gave a banquet May 5 in honor of their mothers. Mrs. R. E. San*oro was in charge of the program: Welcome by Catherine Stout; Response by Mrs. R. C. Benson; Introduction of mothers and group singing led by Mariam Doty. Prayer by Shirley McIntosh. Piano solo, Charlette Parker; Reading by Jo anne Stout; Piano duet by Mrs. Doty and daughter Mariam. The guest speaker for the eve ning was Mrs. R. B. McMinn and Audrey Golden presented her with a lovely orchid corsage. About 34 mothers and daugh ters were present.
