Salem has been dubbed the one m ost likely to win through for a state crow n, but their assurance was shaken m ightily, in the first gam e, when Beaverton, definitely underdogs, cam e within a dangerous w hisker o f ch angin g the m usic for an en tirely d ifferen t tune. L olich, on the mound, did a m asterful jo b and, except for tough luck, w ould have made a little better o f a g ood -look in g op portunity. Under the rules o f the tourna ment, each team has tw o chances at play. In oth er words, beaten twice, means elim ination. Thus, B eaverton was granted one more chance a fter their first blank. Sweet H om o beat them Monday, 1-0. The sem i-pro p la y off is held ev ery night (doubleheaders) but Saturday at W estm oreland park, Portland. R eport is that rem ark able pitching has so far made the gam es outstanding. • • * B A S E B A L L SCHOOLS Baseball hopefuls o f the Tuala tin V alley w ill eye with fond re gard the news that tw o op p or tunities to strut their stu ff will be o ffe re d in August. On Tuesday, the 10th, the L ucky Beavers will turn V aughn Street into a classroom fo r the develop ing ch ances o f baseball prospects, fo r a tw o-day session. T his will be the second annual event of this nature and is offe re d in con ju n ction with the O regon High Schools A ctivities A ssociation. The sch ool is open to all boys 14 years old or m ore. All boys w h o register by letter or card at the V aughn St. Park will be guests o f the Portland B eavers Tuesday and W ednesday nights, when the local stars tan gle with the San D iego Padres. Baseball kn ow ledge-seekers from outside P ortlan d will be housed at the Lewis and C lark and Reed colleges. Classes at the sch ool will run from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. G IA N T S M OVE IN A little closer to home, H illsboro is the site selected by the New Y ork Giants fo r a tryout cam p and sch ool on A ugust 9, lo and 11. Scouts will be on hand to take a gander at the ball playing ability o f all w ho want to display their wares. T his is believed to be the only tryout to be conducted in Oregon by the Giants and no age lim it is set. M ickey Shrader, the ball club's W est Coast scout, will be in ch arge and regular gam es will be played each day o f the session. E ach player com in g to the ma jor-leagu e m arket block will be lequired to furnish his own uni form , shoes and glove. H e must pay his own travel and living ex penses, which will be refunded in the event he glom s on to a Giant contract. T he p la y er(s) w ho survives the w eeding out and w h o wins a big league con tra ct will be sent to a farm club and start w ork ing on the distance he will g o from there.
