A m ong the shattered ruins of Jerusalem , this day. a determined
band of people Just ordinary people who want a homeland li.ite
been figh tin g with last-ditch heroism and courage against an invading
arm y w hich pressed on to an nih ilate them. And the great powers
o f Justice, am ong the world beyond this little pinprick of hostility,
sit shadow -boxing w ith w ords and doing nothing to m ake the flowery
Ideals of Justice and self-d eterm in ation com e into reality.
The tin y nation of Israel it is called. But the dispute that now
rages con cern s more than the mere participants. It Is a long shadow
o f an evil threat which m ight well encom pass the entire world w ithin
a sh ort tim e.
T here is a parallel of history w hich this war In the Holy Land
b rings to mind. That parallel is the Spanish Civil War. the fore­
runner o f World War II.
In Mudrid, the tragic effort of a people losing a battle for their
hom eland and their brave stand again st the com bined forces of three
w ell-equipped fascist-.iazl arm ies found little sym pathy in most
of the diplom ats and statesm en of the world. There were pious
w ords spoken, of course. “E veryone'’ w as really “for” the people
of Spain and
a gain st” the undisguised ex cesses of the flagrantly
bold fa scists and nazis.
B ut w ith the pious words and prom ised san ctloln s against the
rebels, there cam e no arm s, no oil, none of the m uscles of warfare
that w ould put the people of Spain on som ew hat more of even terms
w ith the legions that so relentlessly pursued.
Yes. it w as th e diplom ats and s atesm en, first. But It w as also
th e civilized people of the world who looked down their noses at
the outburst of war in Spain. They, in so m any cases, turned un­
seein g eyes and deaf ears to the facts of the case and the appeals
for aid.
Many, w ell-fed by European standards, shrugged a disinterested
shoulder. Such an affa ir could not m ean an yth ing to the welfare
o f a sta te like the U. 8. A., for Instance. Maybe, it was voiced, the
nazis and the fa scists and fu lan gists would accom plish som ething
for Spain, even It they did win the war.
Such Indifference to this outbreak ugalnst the peace of the world
paid off with grim reality, som e five years later. Virtual death war­
rants for m any fine A m erican lads, ram pant doubt and distrust
throughout the world and the nation of Spain, enslaved and oppressed,
these were the fruits of a “n eu tral” attitude on th e matter.
And here, fresh on the h eels of a terrible world war, w ith scien tista
across the globe harnessing their sk ill and genius, tow ards the
developm ent o f more terribly d evastating m eans of destruction, the
sam e Indifference m ight well be the seed front which World W ar III
m ight spring in fan tastic grow th.
U nited States, by encouraging the partition of P alestin e, stands
responsible In m any ways for the estab lish in g of th e nation, Israel.
