in the sinking of the battleship
Maine. The program followed a
covered dish luncheon at noon.
Mr. Leavitt now resides in Ore

brought out the im portant re

Am erican war and its effect upon
the individual, the United States
and the world at large.
U ntil the year 1898, the United
S tates had been under the sha
dow o f the great em pires of Eu

lowed that date established our
country’s leadership in righting
the w rongs o f oppressed peoples,
not alone in Cuba but in the is
lands o f P uerto R ico and the
P hilippines.
T he U nited S tates had long been
in sym pathy w ith th e efforts of
Cuba to free itself of Spanish
despotism . But the sin k in g of our
battleship M aine in H avana har

post designated by th e authorities,
w as the spark that incited the
A m erican people to action.
The fam ous race o f the battle
ship Oregon to Join the A tlantic
fleet, to help in the destruction

Our idea of the right price on each item we jell is the lowest price in town.
Under a long-established pricing policy, our first step is to give Safeway cus

at the lowest point which will y ielj a fair profit. But we go beyond this in
that we also meet the prices of every competitor, item by item, and day by day.
