The m eeting honored the m em ory of 266 men who lost their lives. 50 years ago. in the sinking of the battleship Maine. The program followed a covered dish luncheon at noon. Mr. Leavitt now resides in Ore­ gon and is at present the district governor of R otary clubs of Ore­ gon and W ashington. H is address brought out the im portant re­ sults that follow ed the Spanish- Am erican war and its effect upon the individual, the United States and the world at large. U ntil the year 1898, the United S tates had been under the sha­ dow o f the great em pires of Eu­ rope. But the events which fol­ lowed that date established our country’s leadership in righting the w rongs o f oppressed peoples, not alone in Cuba but in the is­ lands o f P uerto R ico and the P hilippines. T he U nited S tates had long been in sym pathy w ith th e efforts of Cuba to free itself of Spanish despotism . But the sin k in g of our battleship M aine in H avana har­ bor where It w as anchored at a post designated by th e authorities, w as the spark that incited the A m erican people to action.
