A t the annual session o f this grou p at E ugene in May the log gers urged their m em bership to give w holehearted support to K eep O regon Green, and asked G overn or Snell to name a logger in each o f the eighteen W estern Oregon counties to w ork with the local K O G com m ittees and whose jo b would be to get the logging industry organized to reduce the num ber of m an-caused forest fires. T he log g in g C onference made the nom inations to th e G ov ernor. “ W e expect a greatly Increased hazard from out-of-state travel ers in our w oods," Dean Paul M. Dunn, state head o f K O G pointed out in a letter to the local ch air man, "all o f which means we must double our efforts to pre vent forest and range fires caused by careless acts o f our c i tizens. Mr. Crane is the O regon state representative on the new board and was nam ed in an election in which all m em bers o f his state participated. The new board o f di rectors and new o ffic e r s were seated at a national con vention o f the association at C olorado Springs, Colo. M em bers o f the a ssociation are the produ cers and m arketers o f liquefied petroleum gas — butane and propane — m ore com m on ly know n as “ tan k ” and bottled ” gas. M akers o f appliances and e- quipm ent used with these gases are in the association. DoHiiHLite Payrolls Show (sain D ow nstate' pay rolls fo r the first quarter o f 1946 gained m ore than five m illions over the sam e period a year a g o and about seven m illions over the final 19- 45 quarter while M ultnom ah County pay rolls lost 38 and 9 per cent respectively from the same periods. R eports from 12,000 em ployers su bject to the state u nem ploy m ent law show w age gains this year in 27 out o f 36 counties, while in tw o oth ers the loss was less than one per cent. First quarter totals fo r the state were $143,603,000 against $144,013,000 fo r the precedin g quarter and $188,009,000 fo r the first quarter o f 1945. Four cou n ties- -Douglas, Jose phine, Linn and M orrow —report ed higher w age paym ents fo r the first three m onths o f 1945 than fo r either o f the entire years o f 1938 or 1939. M ultnom ah's propor tion o f the state's totnl decreased to abou t 56 per cent as against nearly 70 per cent in war-tim e.
