In these en couragin g w ords, “ Scholastic M agazine" announces the
lesults o f a survey it took recently am on g m ore than six thousand
representative high sch ool you ng people throughout the country.
T he conclusion should be heartening, but not genuinely surprising to
anyone w ho has observed the A m erican spirit in operation before.
Some o f the answers, indeed, point to a courageousness and belief
in the future that we older folk would d o well to emulate.
F or
instance, only 10 j»er cent o f those questioned expressed the belief
thut governm ent lobs should be provided fo r young people until times
im prove, and 61 per cent said thut if they hud trouble finding Jobs
they would blam e themselves.
As a further com m ent, 90 per cent o f the young men and wom en
questioned believe that tlte best cure fo r unem ploym ent am on g youth
and fo r young people in job s they don 't fit is more preparation for
specialized jobs.
This note o f encouragem ent com es at an apt m om ent.
