E veryone here feels that to reverse the centuries-old process o f China’s absorbing her con qu erors is too big a job fo r even the Japanese to solve. Certainly, Japan has a w onderful opportunity heie. H er future, h ow ever, depends upon h ow she treats the Chinese people. Japanese should not forget that China — thanks to A m erican m issionaries —is passing through a great spiritual revival. W ar lords w hose fam ilies have for generations fought one another are now join in g forces China is learn ing m uch from this rebirth o f patri otism . If Japan is wise enough to capitalize on this ch an ge, histor ians m ay som e day w rite that this w ar m arked a m ilestone in the de velopm ent o f both China and Japan. If. however, Japan fails p .y ch olog ie- ull>. all her m ilitary strength will have been fo r naught. “ Open D oor" Shut Tight The Japanese have established a strict censorship o f all business as a result of new regulations. The banks are now doing very little busi ness and, o f course, most o f the rich Chinese have fled to the in terior’ oi to foreign ports. Japanese came aboard our ship w hen w e landed here. T heir d octors looked at our tongues and their officia ls looITêd at our baggage. This interference with c o m m cice and business and these dictatorial practices will surely last throughout the war -an d probably throughout Japan ’s so-called Five Y ear Plan o f R ehabilitation So it looks like the "O pen D oor" is closed to O ccid entals at least fo r many years to com e. I am very fond o f the Japanese as a people. I have had one in my home for fifteen years. He has been faith ful and kindly. Som e o f my books have been tianslated Into Japanese and I have oth er contacts. I can sym pathize with them fo r being pro voked at China. T he Japanese are a w onderful race. I f they are now fair with China und the rest o f the w orld, the C hinese "in cid en t“—as they call it m ay eventually help both nations. Is't us hope that Japan will not m ake the sam e m istake in settling with China that the Allies made in settling with G erm any in 1919.
