Working for cardi- inals and princes, they had unlimited [funds and unlimited labor power to laid them in production and they set up some very creditable clocks .which tell the time os well as when 'they first did 500 years ago. Clocks were so rare and so useful that they were held in esteem and rawe in those days. The first clock to be set up in England—in the old palace yard in 1288—had a perma nent official appointed by the crown to take charge of it, Bays the Phila delphia Inquirer. Medieval clocks could be very «laborate pieces of work, outrival ing anything to be seen in our day. fTo strike the hours, singing birds, crowing cocks or horn-blowing trumpeters would be ejected from special compartments. Processions of church officials and military offi cers, dressed in vestment or uni form complete to every detail, ¡would be made to parade on a plat form in front of the dial to announce the time of day. Bells would sound >a different chime for every hour of the day. Some of the medieval clocks •were even rigged to show the move ments of the stars and planets. This ¡they did with considerable accuracy —a by no means unworthy achieve m ent for any clockmaker anytime. L M E T ZG E R ITEM S W. H. He will go back after the holiday season to take care of his business. His home is in east Metzer and his wife is one of the teaohers at Metzger grade school.. Gene Enlow of Metzger In the Navy four years, has returned and taken a position with the Sperry Mills In Portland. Harry Carah recently let the contract for clearing up the balance o f .his land in west Metzger to Leon Palmer and M. Dingley of the Green burg neighborhood. ! J U S T TO M A K E S U R E - _________ THE WORLD'S GOOD NEWS .1 MULTNOMAH __________________* _ - The statement that young automo- mubile drivers are killing three times as many persons as middle-aged drivers, made recently by an eastern educator Is no exaggeration but is a slight understatement of the facts as they apply in Oregon, according to Secretary o f State Earl Snell. “ Our accident reports for last year indicate that drivers under the age of 24 are involved in three and one half times as many fatal accidents per capita as áre drivers between the ages o f 55 and 64.” Snell stated. He said there is no definite age at which this transition takes place, but that there is a progressive im provement. as the age group ad vance. Oregon It is about this time of year that the head of the family sits down and ponderB over how much he owes. He collects all his bills and budgets his income accordingly. It is jutt a natural aftermath of Christmas giving. It is not likely, though, that he will include in his debts a little Item of several hundred dollars which he probably isn’t conscious that he owes. Yet that debt does actually exist. It represents his share, and his family’s share, o f the I.O.U.'s that repose in the Federal Treasury. There is nearly forty billion dollars in I.O.U.’s there. They represent the Federal Governments deficit (the public debt.) Right now the per capita share of that debt is about $303, so tf the head of a family of five is figuring up his debts, he must udd 91,515.
