One of the famous ancient monu­
ments of Savona, Italy, is the Pan-
caldo tower, which overlooks the
harbor and was built to guard it at
night. In 1664 the tower was orna­
mented by a clock and a statue
of the Madonna, the latter facing
the sea. Close by one encounters
a small square, the Piazza Colom-
bo. On the right-hand side of this
square, as one faces the harbor,
stands a tall, narrow dwelling, with
a tablet on its wall stating that
