THE FLIGHT OF THE “QUESTION MARK’
The army plane “Question Mark, after beinji in the aii
for 150 hours, shattered the world’s record f o r contin­
uous flight of any machine carrying human beings. The
name of the plane is unique, if not uncanny. What it
dkl is remarkable and phenomenal. ()ne is moved to
feel that venture practically the last word in endurance
tests. On the other hand it may be considered but a
suggestion of the possibility of greater marvels.
Considered seriously or humorously, there are yet
many things to do in the field of exploration, in tests of
strength; and opportunities for “championships” of all
sorts are still open. By the very nature ot things there
are no limits of expansion in mechanical and scientific
achievement.
There are the stars and planets standing out in the
sky. C.reat worlds are beckoning for someone to come
to them. What is in the center of the earth, or even
twenty miles down, is still a mystery. Even this com­
paratively little spheroid called earth has patches of un­
charted seas and unsurveyed lands.
Who will deny that all of the five senses eventually will
he capable of applying themselves over great distances?
We now hear around the world. Television is making
it possible for us to see events happening across contin­
ents. Who doubts that we shall sometime be enraptured
by the fragrance of roses blooming in Picardy while sit­
ting by our own fireside on this side of the ocean? The
apparently ridiculous theories of today are the practical
realities of tomorrow.
Science, invention and human ingenuity remove the
barriers of time and space. Question marks are turned
into statements of fact. Progress is infinite in its work­
ings. Nothing stands still, for mind is active and posi­
tive. To deny the immeasurable and limitless fact of
achievement is to be either grossly ignorant of the prin
ciples involved, or wilfully inattentive to the trends of
modern thought and action.
