7 THE AURORA OBSERVER. AURORA, OREGON The Luxury of Crime Texas Decorates Grave of Vice President Dallas By DOUGLAS MALLOCH H E taxbill’s here (i t comes each year along about this tim e). A bill fo r what? W ell, quite a lot w ill go to pay fo r crime. N o goods w e take, no laws w e break, no evil path pursue, W e tote no guns— w e’ re jo st the ones who pay fo r those" who do. W e need no bail, police or jail, no courthouse on the square W here men are tried, but those outside must pay fo r people there. In cells they sit and do their bit and think it quite a chore, And put aw ay three meals a day that w e are paying for. T W e ’re just the great (in ev’ry state) . m ajority o f men W ho day and night liv e fa irly right, without police or pen. W e need no laws or courts, because we never climb a w all— W e could go on from dawn to dawn without a law at all. In mills we toil, or plow the soil, a living try to win, G ive little time to thoughts o f crime — and then the bill comes in. I sometimes think that those who wink at crime have failed to see, T o folks like us who labor thus, it’s just a luxury. ^ Douglas Malloch.—WNU Service. BURGESS THE HUNTING SEASON ENDS HE very worst things come to an end at last. N o matter how bad a thing is, It cannot last forever. So it w as with the hunting season fo r Light- foot the Deer. There came a day when the law once more protected ail deer, a day when the hunters could no longer go searching fo r L ig h tfo o t Usually there was great rejoicing among the little people o f the Green F orest and the Green Meadows when the hunting season ended and they knew that Ligh tfoot would be in no more danger until the next hunting season. But this year there was no rejoicing. You see, no one could find Lightfoot. Th e last seen o f him was when he was running fo r his life with tw o hounds baying on his trail and the Green Forest filled with hunt ers watching fo r a chance to shoot him. Sammy Jay had hunted everywhere through the Green Forest. Blacky the Crow, whose eyes are quite as sharp as those o f Sammy Jay, had joined in the search. Th ey had found no trace o f Lightfoot. Paddy the Beaver said ,that fo r three days Ligh tfoot had not visited his pond fo r a drink. B illy Mink, who travels up and down the Laughing Brook, had looked fo r Light- fo o t's footprints in the soft earth along the banks and had found only old ones. Jumper the H are had visited L ig h tfo o t’s fa vo rite eating places at night, but L igh tfoot had not been in any o f them. “ I tell you what It is,” said Sammy J ay to Bobby Coon, ‘ ‘something has happened to L ig h tfo o t E ither those hounds caught him and killed him o r he was shot by one o f those hunt ers. The Green Forest w ill never be the same without him. I don’ t thlnx ■ I shall want to come over here very T I I ANNABELLE’S ANSWERS By R A Y THOMPSON much. There isn’ t one o f all the other people who live in the Green Forest who would be missed as Ligh tfoot w ill be.” Bobby Coon nodded. “ That’s true, Sammy,” said he. “ Without Ligh tfoot the Green Forest w ill never be the same. H e never harmed anybody. W hy those hunters should have been so anxious to kill one so beautiful is something I cannot understand. For that matter, I don’ t understand why they want to kill any o f us. I f they really needed us for food it would be a different matter, but they don’t H ave you been up in the Old Pasture and asked Old Man Coyote if he has seen anything o f Ligh tfoot?” E R H A P S a glance at what other cooks have done with the leftovers o f feasts w ill help to use those that are daily problems in most homes. Chicken is the one m eat that is not hard to serve in left-over dishes. A cupful w ill make a delightful salad mixed with tender celery, and less than a cupful, mixed with crumbs and sea soning, w ill stuff tomatoes or peppers. The follow in g is a good recipe to keep on hand: Sammy nodded. “ I’ve been up there twice,” said he. “ Old Man Coyote has -been lying very low during the days, but nights he has done a lot o f trav eling. You know, Old Man Coyote has a mighty good nose, but not once since the day those hounds chased Ligh tfoot has he found so much as a tiny w hiff o f Ligh tfoot’s scent. I thought he might have found the place where Ligh tfoot was killed, but he hasn’ t, although he has looked fo r it. Well, the hunting season for Lightfoot is over, but I am afraid it has ended too late.” WITH ONIONS AND ST E A K S AND C H E E SE S; HER STOMACH FEELS GRAND SINCE SHE K E EPS TUM S ON HAND . . .
