In Auto drivers who meet disaster, and perhaps death, in perty quire at the Observer-Office THUFSDAY OCTOBER 14 1920. an attempt to beat a train to a railroad crossing failed to realize how little time they would have saved had they “ made it” —with disastrous results. The average passenger train requires less than 10 seconds to pass the crossing, and the heavier trains not over 20 seconds. Most of the crossing accidents are due to collision with high speed trains, but in any case the de lay to motorist is insignificant. Only a few seconds! Is it Worth the risk? Only to those who have less brains than time. SP^RE ‘T H E M ” DOGS! According to Salem papers, county clerk Boyer has inforrped anxious dog owners that the dog license law has been rendered non-effective through injunction proceed ings, and that dog owners outside of incorporated towns need not worry about the movements of the county dog catchers. Until the court makes the injunction permanent or declares the law proper and constitutional, dog owners may rest easy, for at present the county officials slogan is “ spare ‘them’ dogs” ! Thereafter it will be a crime to say, “ you poor prune!” Pa Perkins to the contrary notwithstanding. The hopes of all counties that voted bonds in excess of the 20 per cent limitation have been blasted by the supreme court’s decision that such bond issues are invalid because they exceed the 2 constitutional limitation in effect at the time the bond elections were held, although the limi tation has been increased to 6 per cent. Union county has sold its bonds thus issued, and the owners of the bonds are now suing for the interest—and good lawyers believe they will collect it, even though thé issue has-been declared invalid. The bank of California, Portland, is authority for the statement that 70 per cent of all the money loaned on Ore gon real estate comes from outside the state. The passage of the measure to fix the legal rate at 4 per cent would re sult in the withdrawal of this money. Wholesale f orclosures would follow and thousands of home owners, farmers and business men would lose their mortgaged property. Our mills and factories could not secure loans and many would be forced to close, and there would be widespread unem ployment and financial distress. To thinking people these will be the inevitable results should this measure pass. The welfare and reputation of the state require that it be overwhelmly beaten. r $ ervice Is Our Slogan afety Is Our Watchword The Worth of a Dollar l must be judged by what it will buy. And while dollars have been cheap before, they have always increased in value again. The moral is plain. Save your cheap dollars, for their purchasing power is sure to increase. ■ a This picture shows the best way to test phonograph’ s realism.
