This is v a very healthy condition and indicates that people generally | are using judgment and during these prosperous times are laying away funds for future needs. We pay 4% on time deposits and 4% compounded quart erly on savings accounts. You are given absolute assurance of safety and the satisfaction of being able to get your money when you need it. There is no loss from market fluctuation. A time deposit with us is the ideal short time investment. u k It is not strange that Americans object to grand opera in German while our hospitals are still filled with “ per- man-made” cnpples, while our soldiers are still dying from “ German-gassing” , and while a hundred thousand Ameri can families are still mourning the loss of their sons who were victims of German-bullets. This aversion to German grand opera comes not from the soldiers%nd sailors alone. It comes from the heart of every true, loyal and honest American, It is the natural resentment against an affront which shows an astonishing lack of understanding o f the decencies of life. When we remember that Otto Goritz, one of the chief exponents of German grand Opera in America, has admitted that he sang (in German) an ode celebrating the sinking of the Lusitania at a party at the home of Hans Tanscher in New York, even our pro-Ger man friends may pardon our preference for American grand opera! Practically every teacher in Oregon sees the necessity and value of physical exercises in the public schools, but the.public at large do not yet seem to fully realize the necessity of providing facilities and equipment to carry out the provisions of the law that at least 20 minutes daily be given to physical exercises in every school and to every pupil. Teachers are eager to do their best, but it is up to the public to supply grounds, play sheds, gymnasiums, play ground apparatus, and equipment. Good schools everywhere are alive to these needs. Only the fossils and the mossbacks refuse to supply them. The Canby News is much disturbed over the “ report” that Judge Dimick will receive the support of both the Enterprise and the Banner-Courier for the Clackamas county senatorship and that E. E. Brodie will be support ed by both papers for the republican nomination for secre tary of state. . The News might do far worse than to fall in line for both candidates. Hermes Lodge, Knights of Pythias, of this city has initiated a campaign to double its membership. I'he mem bership of this lodge represents a high type of citizenship and respectability. A Pythian Lodge is an asset to any community and the strengthening of tne Aurora lodge of that order will be a distinct benefit to this city. “ I wish to express to the millions of The Christian Herald and McCall’ s, Americans, who have made the work both one year for $3.00.
