AN OBSOLETE SYSTEM
It is said that 212 nations of the world use the Metric
system of weights and measures while only the United
States and Great Britain are using the old-fashioned, cum­
bersome, obsolete German system, which Germany dis­
carded 50 years ago as a worthless system.
An Englishman—James Watt—invented the Metric
system in 1783, giving the world the logical, decimal sys­
tem of measurement, which 212 nations adopt, but which
Watt’s own country rejects, and plods along with the
ancient system which its formidable commercial rival
(Germany) discarded half a century ago.
But the real tragedy is that the United States slavish­
ly follows Britain in her weights and measures and retains
them, while the rest o f the world, except these two, adopt
the decimal system which everybody understands!

The Postal Telegraph Company upon its return from
the Government to the owners, at once reduced its rates
20 per cent, restoring the rates that were effective before
the government took control. The Western Union Tele­
graph Company refuses to make a similar reduction,stand­
ing pat on the higher rates fixed by the government. The
action of neither company is not much of an argument in
favor of government ownership.

there will be no Elk shooting in Oregon. • The old law of
1909 protected elk until August 1,1919—a ten year period.
The 1913 legislature made this protection perpetual.
Hence there can be no open season for elk—until the law
is changed. There are only a few elk in Oregon apd it
would be folly to change the present protective provisions
of our laws.
