MANY TOWNS THREATENED Settlements on North Shore of Lake Superior Are Doc me J. Heavy Rain the Only Ri I if Posalble Terror-Stricken Inhabitants Flee to Lake Heavy Wind Aidt Fin Naval Training Ship Aids in Fight Takes Many on Board. Duluth, Minn., Sept. 12. Unless a heavy rain falls within the next 48 hours, the total destruction by forest fires of every town on the north shore of Lake Superior in Cook county Is al most certain. No rain has fallen in this district since July 10 and every thing in the woods is as dry as parch ment. Last evening the walls of fire, with a heavy wind behind them, ex tended all the way to the settlements. Wild-eyed and shaking with fear, the inhabitants are gathered along the shore prepared to take to the lake in small craft should the worst come. Within less than two miles of Grand Marais, a town of 1,500, there is in flames a tract of spruce and brush over three miles in length. A strong land breeze from the northwest is at pres ent shooting the fire along the out skirts of the town, giving the village a lease of life. The training ship Gopher, which brought the naval militia to aid in fighting the fire, is in the harbor and is taking women and children aboard. The ship was welcomed with tears of joy on her arrival, and only the aid of the militia has saved the town up to this time. Conditions at Tigeon River Indian Reservation, at Big bay, Chicago bay, Cascade, Cofton and Nutson, are sim ilar to those existing at Grand Marais. Reaver bay, on Lake Superior, 80 miles northeast of Duluth, is reported to be in peril. NEW COINS DEFECTIVE. St. Qaudena Twenties Oo Not "Stack" With Old Ones. San Francisco, Sept. 12. Activity at the San Francisco mint in the coin ing of the St. Gaudens gold pieces has been suspended. The first few days' output amounted to $430,000, but the double eagles, it has been found, will not "stack with the eld coins of the same denomination. In a stack of $400 the new coins are half the thickness of a piece short. While the double eagles again bear the legend "In God We Trust," it has been learned that the trust is not of ten-dollar dimensions. Superintendent Sweeney received a telegram from Washington saying, Coin eagles with 'In God We Trust.' " In due time a letter was received by him from Washington authorities which read, "We wired you as fol lows: "Coin no eagles with 'In God We Trust.'jJ This we beg leave to con firm." The coinage of the eagles stopped and the money presses are idle, await ing instructions. -JilllLi Al t OlIOL 3 1'LU VKS V. Washington, Sept. 12. - In a flight lasting one hour, ten minutes and 26 seconds, Orville Wright late yesterday surrpassed all his previous exploits for a time and distance flight for a heavier1 than-a'r machine. Two flights were made at Fort Mey er, Va, yesterday, the first being of ten minutes and 50 seconds duration. for the purpose of showing what rate of speed he had.been traveling during his long flights of the past three days. Yesterday a test demonstrated, accord' ing to the aviator's calculations, that the speed of the aeroplane during the record-breaking flights of Wednesday and Thursday was 39.55 miles an hour. The majority of those who witnessed the long flight were roused to great enthusiasm when the aviator for the third successive day broke his previous record. Wants War Balloon at Atatcadero San Francisco, Sept. 12. Colonel M. P. Maus, head of the department of California, today asked the War de partment to send at least one dirigible balloon to Atascadero, Cal., when the maneuvers of the California and Ari zona troops are in progress. It is the object of the commanding officers to reproduce as nearly as possible the conditions of actual warfare in the en campment this ye r and it is desired that a balloon be cert here for trial in the sham battles that are to be fought under the oaks. E. Hya'op. Asronomlat. University of Idaho r.culturl fciperiinant Station. Muacow. On account of the numerous in quiries coming into our station, wc find it necessary to issue this presi bulletin concerning the so-called "Alaska" wheat. This wheat, when given ample field space or conditions favorable to the individual plant, has a branching head borne on a rather tough straw at a height of between four and five feet. The mesh bears two and three ker nels. When grown under close field conditions the head tends to be much smaller, branches less, and the mesh bears from one to two kernels, very seldom three. If heads grown under these conditions alone were examined the impression would be obtained that this wheat never bears but two ker nels to the mesh, a mistake which some writers appear to have made. The beards, while not numerous, are dark in color and considerably stronger than we find on our common wheats, but not so long or stiff as those found on the durums or maca roni wheats. The normal kernel if light in color, short and plump, with an unusually open groove, which al lows the kernel to be easily broken in threshing. A cross-section shows the interior to be white and powdery, with comparatively little horny starch The shrunken kernels naturally are harder. Taking everything into considera tion, I am led to conclude that this is the Egyptian or Miracle wheat, a Poulard, and that it belongs to that variety of the Egyptian known as Eldorado, which is very closely re lated to the seven-headed variety. The Toulards are peculiarly adapted to dry regions, but never have been Brown to any extent in America. I heir yields have never proved to be of such a nature as to warrant their extensive growth( even for stock food And the inferiority of the flour pro duced from them has prevented their use to any extent for the production of bread. The high yields claimed for thi wheat in this section of the country, in some cases 277 bushels per acre, are fabulous. One of the promoters states that .from one head of the wheat he obtained seven pounds; from these seven pounds he produced 1345 pounds, or a yield in round num bers of 2U(7 fold. It is from these figures that the yields noted in the various papers, and in the circular of the Adams-Hobe Seed Grain com pany, of Juliaetta, Idaho, are com puted. To show the ridiculousness of computing yields in this way, we de termined in a couple of fascs, the number of grains produced from one seed of Little Club grown under fa vorable conditions in our breeding plat. One plant produced 1170; the other 1800 kernels. Now, reasoning as this seed company has done, if we should plant one bushel of thi j Little Club to the acre, we would obtain 1178 or 1800 bushels. This would be a rather high yield, even for Idaho. This year the company had 700 acres in the wheat grown on different farms in this locality. A thirty-acr. tract near Moscow, which was threshed in the middle of August, went about thirty-two bushels per acre. Mr. Adams stated at that time that his best yields had been thirty five bushels. He supplemented this remark, however, with the statement that his stands were poor in every case. Hut considering the large acre age, the fact that several different farmers grew the crop, and the effect of a close stand, noted above, we must take this as an indication, at least, of the yielding power of the wheat. This, however, would not be considered an extra large yield for this country. The analysis of the wheat upon which the company appears to base its hopes amounts to practically noth ing in determining the bread-makins quality of the flour. It is true, that hluestetn wheat, which analyzes higher in protein than Little Club, makes a better quality of flour, but it is alsc true that macaroni wheat, which .an alyzes higher in protein than IMue stem, makes a lower class of flour. and consequently is discriminated against by the miller. The low-grade Hours turned out from our mills usu ally show a higher protein content than the patent. Corn has consider- able protein, but the chemist seems unable to find any gluten (that all es sential part of a good flour). liven if the chemiM had found a high gluten content in "Alaska" wheat, we would still not be justified in concluding that the wheat would make a good quality of flour. The proof of tht wheat is in the bread it will make, promised to have a milling test madt Upon our request the company hai soon. Until this test is made, how ever, we must assume that the wheat will make no better flour under the name of "Alaska" thsn it d d when known as "Wheat of Miracle." In spite of all the beautiful stories which have been written concerning the origin of this wheat, regardless of the many wonderful things which have been imagined about its quality, and taking into consideration the im pression as to yield, which has so skillfully been thrown broadcast throughout the American continent by this seed company, who advertise their wheat for sale at $J0 per bushel, we nave yet to find any point of merit in it which would warrant the public paying more f,r "Alaska" wheat than the prevailing maVet price of out common varieties. MAKES o A LASTING CURE ' There are .ertaia mineral medicines which will remove the external symptoms of Contagious Rlood Poison, and shut the disease up in the system for awhile, but when the treatment is left off the disease will surely return. Then-the loathsome symptoms of ulcerated mouth and throat, copper-colored spots, fallinsr hair, sores and ulcers,' etc., are usually worse because the disease has made rapid progress on the iuternal members, and weakened the constitution and general health of the sufferer. S. S. S. is the only remedy that can be used with pet feet safety in the treatment of Contagious Blood Poison, and with the assurance that a lasting cure will result. This medicine, made entirely of roots and herbs of recognized curative and tonic value, antidotes and destroys the powerful virus of the disease, and by purifying the blood of every particle of the poison and enriching and strengthening the circulation, removes every sypmptom of the trouble. S. S. S. does not hide or cover up the disease tn any way, but drives it entirely out from the blood, leaving not the slihtebt trace for future outbreaks.
