Aurora, Or., Thursday July 30, 1903 The new Giant Cherry, across between the Lambert and King", created quite a sensation on the Portland market last week. There were some specimens that measured an inch and a half in diameter. NO DUTY ON HOPS Britbb Government Will Not Put Tariff oa American Hoti Watcrvillc,N. Y.,Timc3i The1 British government will not grant the petition of the English hop growers on American and other Imported hops. The committee has made its final report and it decided Against an import duty. The findings of the committee 6ccasion no surprise. The major ity of the members were free , traders, one was a brewer and ' another a hop dealer, whose busi ncs is principally in American hops.' It was understood by in telligent hop growers in England when the committee began its hearings, that no hope could be 6xpcctcd from the government as long as the liberal party was in power. Added to the pronounced v iews of the liberals on this ques tion, was the influence of the English brewers, who, like the brewers of every other country, want to buy their raw materials as cheaply as possible. A 40s duty in England on mcrican hops would have been a scrioui matter for the growers yf this country. The United States' raises about C'JO.OOO bales annually and consumes only two thirds of them. Wcio the Eng lish cutlet for the surplus closed home prices would bo on a ruin ous basis until the American pro auction could be adjusted to the consumption in the country. As it is the danger has been averted and we will send our surplus to England, where the acreage in in hops will continue tc decline. Alice and tha Sharp Tack Alice Booscvelt-Longworth has been placed under tho ban of Kentucky society because bhv placed a sharp tack on tho chair of a large public ofilcial in the capitol at Washington just in time for the official to sit down on the tack. A jncmber of congress ap pears as a witness against her by- declaring that ho heard tho fat man howl as he fat down on the tack. What motive impelled 'Princess Alice" to do this we are unable to understand. .She may bo a believer of the Single J.ax for all we know, and if she is $hc should come to Oregon. . But Iho situation probably would re main uncharged, IV r it it: the other fellow humanity like.: to ico get tho sharp end . and not himself. It i3 laughable to sc him get it, but we are ready to jell take it away when it J2ing to stick us. Alice should have boon more fecrctive placing the tack. She have done it when no one .. Alice has committed no unpardonable sin. She hajfrcxiher father wield the Pig Stick. Why shouldn't she use asharp tack ? It's a woman's way, that's all. Although they occupied room3 ' near each other in the Auditorium Annex at Chicago, Bryan and I learst paid not the slightest atten tion to each other. This occurred while Bryan and Frank E. Hitch cock, chairman of the Bepublican National committee were holding a pleasant chat. Bryan naturally thinks Hearst should help him in" his campaign. Hearst is too self ish in hi3 own personal ambition to aid the Commoner in his fight for the presidency. Shortly after Bryan's nomination Hearst is sued a statement from Paris, de scribing Bryan as a chameleon a species of lizard that takes on the color of every object with which it comes in contact Ifesrst will no doubt conthaif tins attack through hid newspapers, - unless some understanding is reached betttetn the two men. We do not believe Bryan will ever make overtures to the yellow journalist. Hearst wants to be president himself, but if any body else wants him to be president we have never heard of it. When Hearst was candidate for gover nor of New York Bryan went over there and helped him out, but Hearst is not the type of man in whom gratitude is an impelling virtue. Failing to secure any thing at the hands of the demo crats ho now seeks to organic a party of his own, subject to his orders, but this party will never reach any great proportions. Hearst is not a leader cf men. He is a farce comedy actor, play ing to the galleries, and most of his applause comes from that source and from his personal ben eficiarica. Frank E.
