ROOSEVELT I-ACINQ A TEST Cake is (he Man for Senator Nation Waits for Oregon's Verdict for or Agaiust (he President. A great many Republicans are beginning to soberly ask them selves, "Why should we elect Gov., Chamberlain to the United States Senate?" And the echo is answering, "Why, indeed!" There is an overwhelming ma jority of Republicans in this State. Inordinary elections they have, and The Telegram believes wisely, looked to the men with out reference to the party brand which they wore. In this way they have disciplined party and at the same time raised the stand ard of the local public service. . Put in the matter of the election of a United States Senator they have presented to them a differ ent problem. There they come in touch with the party of the Na tion the party of Rooseveltj of which they so warmly approve, and the terdict which they ren der the general public mlist ac cept as very largely the judge ment of the voters of Oregon up on tnat administration, uur elections occur at an odd season of the year. We here fire the rst gun of the Presidential elec tion. The verdict is made up in advance, so far as the rest of the country is concerned. The Nation knows the State is overwhelming ly Republican. It likewise knows that the administration of Presi dent Roosevelt has received en thusiastic approval. That admin istration, disguise it as we will, is now on trial before tne coun try. By the general masses of people it has been warmly ap proved: by the corporate and plutocratic interests it is bitterly reviled, and, while little is being done openly, there is deep down a smouldering fire of resentment that cannot be extinguished. For the very reason the pluto- cratie forces of the country hate th-3 president, tne masses of the people admire and approve him. If under siich circumstances such as these it goes forth that th3 people of Oregon in June elect a Democrat for United States Senator, the adminisration receives a blow in the house of its supposed friends that it is con ceivable may have a serious effect upon the plans of the friends of the administration and upon the groat conte3t in November fol lowing. It must riot be forgot ten that much quiet work has been dne in , recent months against the administration. One may see the effect of it upon every hand in every community -the clacquers busily engaged in hamstringing Roosevelt, and in sidiously undermining.the plat form of principles which he had been steadily putting forth in his messages, and speeches. If a well-known and supposedly safe administrtiori State falls by the wayside in June, the prestige of the administration Beverly Suffers and no man whp .honestly faces the rjueotion can see it otherwise. From this standpoint, which is something more lhan a partisan standpoint, the natier appeals to Tre. Telegram. It believes- with heartiness and sincerity in the advanced platform of principle.! which t e President 3 luiin.'.; down, in the elimination of ppec ial privileges and ths equality of opportunity for which tha Presi dent stands, and to propagate and devQlop which he has . done more than any other man of his generation. It considers this a matter of patriotism, rather than partisanship.' and it proposes to do whatever lies in it3 power to uphold and , nustain the man whose very name typifies these modern'enlightened doctrines. In doing so, it believes it expresses the profound conviction of an enormous majority of the people of Oregon, irrespective of their party affiliations.
