I. It. Yates conveys the intelligence that
himself and Clias. O llurd have succeed
ed In estasllshing quarters at the Red
Rock mine, two and a half miles out of
Su.npter, a-id are now at work on a tun
nel to tap the main lead, which passes
this group of claims. Messrs. llurd and
Yates will probably remain in at the Ked
Rock the greater portion of the winter.

Miss Minnie Mueller, the elliclent at

missed by the public for the past week.
She will return from Haker City tomor
row. Mrs. and Miss Carlesou, of Granite,
are the guests of Mr. and Mrs. J. II. Hob
bins and will perhaps spend tlu remainder
of the winter in Sumpter. Mrs. Carlesou
Is a sister of Mr. Nubbins.
Owing to the fact that there was not a
(uorum of the city council in town at the
time, 110 meeting of the council was held
Satu'd.iy evening. A meeting will be
held tomorrow evening.
President Kohhlus and Cashier Miller,
ol the First Hank of Sumpter, were both
elected directors ol the Farmers & Traders
hank, of La Grande, at the annual meet
lug of the stockholders held there last
week.
J.hu V. James, recently lost In the
( ireenhom mountains, Is supposed to Invc
had relatives In Oregon. The local
lodge of Ited Men at Sumpter would like

ter Saturday evening to attend a dance
given at the saw mill below McEwen.
The occasion for the festivities was the
opening of a new boarding house. Th
