Wednesday, June 6, 1900 THE SUMPTER MINER. :J t 3 . CONCENTRATES FOR THE SMELTER Shipment to be Made From the Quartzburg District Ttie Blue Mountain Chief and Cougar properties, of Quartburg, owned by Messrs. Marsh Howell, of Prairie City, and George C. Shearer, of Portland, are among the oldest in the Quartzburg dis trict. These mines still continue to be bullion producers, and are excellent properties. Considerable work has been done In the past In the way of running tunnels and sinking shafts, and work Is being prose i cuted steadily. While the ore in the low-1 er tunnel is refractory, it assays something , over J40 to the ton, and with proper treat ment would pay well. The ore in the upper tunnel and shafts is of a free mill ing nature and assays over $140 to the) ton. I In an Interview with Mr. Howell, the! resident owner, a Miner representative I was enabled to gather these facts concern-1 ing work which has been done this spring: Messrs. Net Babcock and Ren Parrott have been doing contract work on the claims for the past two months. They commenced to drift from an old thirty foot shaft and drifted and stoped out about fifty feet of mineral. Eleven tons of ore was obtained from this work, which was hauled to Ishum Laurance's mill and worked. The result obtained from the eleven tons of ore was over $1,000 In gold. The tailings, amounting to about seven tons, were saved. They had the tailings assayed and found them to be rich both in silver and gold; going something over $20 to the ton in each metal. The tailings will be concentrated to about a ton, and the product sent to the new smelter at Sumpter. Prairie City Miner. GRANDE RONDE DISTRICT Some Good Ore Bodies Being Uncovered in That New Mining Section Better showing of mineral cannot be mad a fro.n any camp in the great north west than those of flic Grande Ronde river mining district. The specimens that are being brought down from time to time from tlio.se claims are simply immense. That the Grande Ronde district is going to turn out to be one of the greatest, is a fact established beyond any doubt a fact that has so thoroughly convinced those win are in a position to know the real value of their properties, that it would re quire a good sum of money to buy them. Charles Mutchler, formerly of the He public camp, in Washington, arrived in Latirande yesterday with a small sack Tilled with specimens of rock, taken from a new find up there. These specimens were good enough to have come from the best vein in the Le Hoi. Among these specimens were pieces of quartz chock full of copper, In which could be seen the glittering gold. They were beauties. He also had sulphate of lime specimens. Mr. Mutchler says he Is not looking for any other mining camp, "because" said he, "the Grande Konde Is going to be one of the greatest I was ever In." Mr. Mutchler says that develop ment work Is being rapidly pushed, and that the claims are getting better all the time. The ledges are widening all the time in each use where the work of devel-' UpillCIIl l KUIIIK UU lINU IIIJI (IIC il3M)9 are getting better all the time. Lou Cor bett, who was here last week, gives the same report. Mr. Mutchler says the high grade ore that is on the dumps of the various claims would fill several cars, and ! average ore on the dump, all of which is awaiting railroad transportation facilities, would till considerable more cars. Among the good showing claims up there are the Pay Boy, the Royal, the Standard, the Old Hunter, Quartz Cabin, Hcllpse, Gray Hon, Sulphur, Tiger, Kansas, Blue jay, Winchester, Bluebird and the Mulr claim. That the Grande Ronde river district Is going to prove a great producer, Mr. Mutchler says Is as sure as the rising I sun. The rock from the various claims 1 assays from J 3 on surface showings as high as 5 1000 from selected specimens. LaGrande Journal. Rich Strike in the Michigan Hardly a week passes, yes, even a day, but what some new bonanza is unearthed in the Quartzburg district. The latest rich find Is on the Michigan, a claim situ ated northeast and on the same hill as the Copper King. The property is owned by Frank Sargent and other parties. Rock taken from the surface at random was brought to town Tuesday, and assays made by Joe Reese show $210.42 gold, $2.83 silver and one per cent copper. Practically no work has been done on this claim, but the owners say that a three and one-half foot ledge runs the entire length. The owners have another claim on the same hill and adjoining the Michigan, called the Dexter, and surface assays show seventeen per cent copper, eighty-two cents gold and f 1.20 In silver. The Dexter has a four-foot ledge and Mr. Sargent thinks from surface indications Is a direct extension of the Michigan. The owners left Prairie City Wednesday with provisions and a complete mining outfit and will begin operations at once. Prairie City Miner. Seattle Mining Mail Here. A. W. Anderson, of Seattle, arrived in Sumpter a few days since. He is largely Interested in mining in Washington and comes here to look for profitable invest ments In the same line. He says most every body on the Sound are wild about Cape Nome, and local mining Interests are suffering In consequence. Mr. Anderson is now visiting the several mining camps of this district and will make a thorough Inspection before returning north.
