Calder, the secretary and treas urer of the Sumpter Townslte company, has been in Portland several days looking over the local field. Mr. Calder said to a Review man that the past winter had been an active one and they anticipate excep tional activity during the present summer . .. ... . ... i ' " cordially greeted by Mr. Charles. Watson, Several properties adjacent to Sumpter who, rogeiner wmi tils iwn tuoiiiers ana 1!IVe been developed extent developed extensively, among which he mentioned the Concord, owned largely by La Grande and Pendleton parties. This company has four or live claims in the sime section as the O. K. property, upon which some extensive work Messrs. George Culp and John Horn, ioustittite the working force. What seemed to the writer to be a tre mendous force of water, w ith at least 200 pounds pressure, came down Irom the mountain In Heavy Iron pipe and, rushing 1 .,s been done. There has been consld through the uole, w hirled rocks and dirt 1 erable done on the Diadem property also. doA'ii the bottom ot the gulch toward the T,e nter Mountain Is one of the old prop ground sluices w ith as much ease as a ten crtes, having been worked for ten years ton hammer would crack an egg shell on ,,;lst. The Inter Mountain Is one of lessees of the mine, Mr. Watson, and it is the intention to move the penstock still further up the mountain to obtain greater lressuie. In addition to the water being forced through the pipes, the assistance of what in miners' parlance Is termed a "six-shooter" is brought Into requisition. This Is an apparatus placed on a dam erected to Catch the waters of a small rivulet flowing down a ravine, and so adjusted that when the dam is tilled a flood gate Is opened and the water is allowed to escape. When the d.uu has. been relieved of the water the gate closes again. It works automati cally. The giouud pays from the grass roots to bedrock, and prospects well from one end to the other of the claim In fact the entire length of the gulch. T, he owner of the claim, Mr. Walter Rrowu, look fjooo from the claim last the properties that has always paid for its own development work. He states there Is much activity In the Susauville, Can yon City, Prairie City, Alamo, Lawton and Granite sections. NEEDHAM, E. M. WARD, C. H. CROMWELL, W. M. ROBINSON. April 17, 1900. Who I Tbii Fresh, Fake Drummer? The Albany Democrat says: "A drum mer, who was in the city yesterday, says the bottom has dropped completely out of Sumpter and that people are leaving fast, with the price of real estate tumbling from the pedestal upon which It had been rest ing. It Is said that Albany men have sev eral thousand dollars In real estate there that has already greatly decreased In value. Another big strike, though, might revive matters." It would be well for the citizens of Sumpter to ascertain who this drummer with the self cocking mouth Is, and when he makes his periodical trip to this camp to give him a frost in a busi ness way, that will at least teach him to confine himself to something approaching the truth when Indulging In his favorite pastime, of listening to the music cf his own voice. The bottom hasn't fallen out of Sumpter. The town, its present and future prosperity, are based on the surrounding mines. They are still here; are being worked and continue to produce gold. Other rich leads are being discov ered dally. Business in every legitimate line continues good and there are buyers here for every bargain offered In real estate. Clot el the School Year.
