In addition to the water being forced
through the pipes, the assistance of what
in miners' parlance Is termed a "six-shooter"
is brought Into requisition. This Is
an apparatus placed on a dam erected to
Catch the waters of a small rivulet flowing
down a ravine, and so adjusted that when
the dam is tilled a flood gate Is opened
and the water is allowed to escape. When
the d.uu has. been relieved of the water the
gate closes again. It works automati

Who I Tbii Fresh, Fake Drummer?
The Albany Democrat says: "A drum
mer, who was in the city yesterday, says
the bottom has dropped completely out of
Sumpter and that people are leaving fast,
with the price of real estate tumbling from
the pedestal upon which It had been rest
ing. It Is said that Albany men have sev
eral thousand dollars In real estate there
that has already greatly decreased In
value. Another big strike, though, might
revive matters." It would be well for
the citizens of Sumpter to ascertain who
this drummer with the self cocking mouth
Is, and when he makes his periodical trip
to this camp to give him a frost in a busi
ness way, that will at least teach him to
confine himself to something approaching
the truth when Indulging In his favorite
pastime, of listening to the music cf his
own voice. The bottom hasn't fallen
out of Sumpter. The town, its present
and future prosperity, are based on the
surrounding mines. They are still here;
are being worked and continue to produce
gold. Other rich leads are being discov
ered dally. Business in every legitimate
line continues good and there are buyers
