1H& SUMPTER ?M1NER. Wednesday, March 14, 1900 8 EXPERIENCED MINERS, Can't Buy Mines, So Will Develop Prospects. I. VV. Campbell, an experienced Mon tana miner, has been In Sumpter for some days past. He has been two months in the district and has acquired interests In thirty locations. Mr. Camp bell was superintendent of the Gold Sovereign and also of K. Porter Gold King mines in the Cripple creek district and spent last summer in the Buffalo Hump country, Idaho. Of the thirty claims in which he has acquired Interests since his arrival here, he is associated witli Captain Wood, the famous mining expert of Chicago In twenty-one. In a very short while, as soon as the snow disappears from the mountains, these gentlemen will begin operations, developing any and all of these properlies which "look good" after being prospected. They both confirm the story published in Till: MlNI-R last weel relative to Captain Wood's proposed large operations in this district. That gentlemen was shown tlf article on his return from the ( ireeu Horn and asked as to its accuracy. He replied: " There is more or less truth In it. I am thoroughly satisfied with the district; am convinced that it is a great mining country. I will remain here indllinltely, and will try to make mines of some claims I have secured. Captain Wood represents large capital and came here intending to buy a de veloped, producing mine, but none such can be purchased at anything like a money making tigure, except on an Inter est paying basis. This change in his plans, that of developing prospects, is the best reiommendation any experienced, successful miner, as he Is, can give a dis trict. Mr. Campbell says that this is indeed the practical prospector's paradise, that It is, relatively speaking, a virgin mining region, for thus far only ledges that ap pear on the surface, outcropplugs at the appex or exposed by erosion in the gulches, have been worked or located. He says little or no effort has been made to follow tloat and discover hidden veins. "Jut at the Sun Went Down." Prank Campbell, a former employe of the O. It. V N. Co. and a brother of Robert Campbell, of the State, lias just re turned from the Sumpter mining district, where he has been for several months past and was the fortunate dWoverer, with others, of a group of mines which they have named "Just as the Sun Went Down," 'they being found late In the nlteruoon. Assay of the rock have been made which has proven verv rich, going away up in the hundreds. Mr. Campbell came to I. a Grande on the early morning train to visit his brother and friends and iijipart to them the news of his good tortuue. He returns to Maker City to morrow to meet parties Irom the east, who have made him an otfer ot $40,000 tor his interest in a part of the group, leaving him a large inteaest In the re mainder. Ills friends congratulate him on his good luck. I. a Grande Chronicle. Annual Mating May Queen Stockholder. George .1. Harrett, the experienced superintendent of the May Queen' mine auJ mill at Granite, Oregon, and In which not a small amount of Salt Lake talent has Interested itself, stopped off In this city a couple of days on his return from , l:remout, Nebraska, where he had been attending the anuunl meeting of share holders. Of the property Mr. Barrett, j who is also secretary of the company, says he has ore enough now blocked out I to supply the needs of the mill for many years, the ore showing an average better than $10.50 per ton. Upon this quality of ore the new mill will be started about April 1, the capacity of the plant to be in creased as soon as material can be had from the manufactory. At the. recent, meeting of shareholders Thad H. Qulnn was made president; James G. End, vice president; George J. Barrett, secretary; H. D. Dunning, treasurer, and John j riiomscn, general manager. Dlnius a half interest in the six mining claims Montana, Michigan, Colorado, I Glen, Kruger and Minnie, located near Alamo. Vigorous development work will 1 be begun on these claims at once, with a 1 view to putting In machinery this coming , summer. P. H. Mallory owns the other 1 half Interest in these valuable claims. The Sumpter correspondent of the j Hoise Statesman gives these interesting ' figures: This camp, while not unusually active last month, still maintained a good min ing and milling average. A total of 166 stamps pounded uninterruptedly through out the 28 days of February, and the 10 mines in complete operations produced a round Hzoo.ooo for that period. Mining development In the way of slop ing, cross-cutting and exploring, however, continued upon six of these nine mines, and the Magnolia, 10 stamps, ran for a portion of the period mentioned. The total output given for the month, ft 06,000, does not Include the output of the three above mentioned Irregular pro ducers; nor does it include returns from shipments to the Selby Smelting works at San Francisco of the marvelously rich ore recently struck on the 3$o-foot level at the Golconda mine, owned by the Eng lishes. Nor does the total given embrace returns from the shipments of concen trates to smelters at Trail, Tacoma and Everett by the Golconda, Bonanza, Columbia and Badger; neither Is the value of base ores shipped from the working mines In the young Cable Cove district to the Everett smelter embraced In the above. Machinery for new mills upon 14 mines has been ordered already and will be in stalled before June 1.
