Every Condition Favorable to Mining Found Here There probably is no other comparative ly new mining district In the United States, with the exception possibly of Cape Nome, that now finds as conspicu ous, as frequent and as favorable mention as does Sumpter, Oregon, writes the min ing editor of the Anaconda Standard. If this district is not one of great prom ise, then It is being written up by gangs of boomers who are either exceedingly vis ionary and optimistic, or utterly destitute of common honesty. Hut we know that some of them are men of both honor and, in general, sound judgment. Besides, it is a demonstrated fact that there are some good mines in the district, and many experienced mining men are showing their confidence by heavy investments there In mining and other properties. Hence, while there probibly Is a vein of exaggeration In some of the reports, as there Is respecting all mining districts in the earlier stages of their development, we conclude that there is a broad substratum of truth in the re ports and that the district has a bright fu ture before it. The auriferous deposits of eastern Ore gon are known to be of extended area. Many rich placers have been found along the water courses, and there is no reason to doubt that the mountains are ribbed and seamed with gold-bearing quartz ledges. Until recently the attention of practical mining men had been rather diverted from Oregon than attracted to it, and the min ing operations there had been conducted by unscientific and even antiquated meth ods. I his is now being changed and the mineral belt of the Webfoot state is re ceiving ample consideration at the hands of bothoipitalists and practically educated mining men. In the Sumpter region every condition, Including climate, is favorable for the con duct of mining operations. There is an abundance of both timber and water, the climate is good, and the region is easy of aX$dt Willi a small capital we would take our chances at Sumpter a thousand llttqver rather than at Nome or any inhere tbc In the Ice-bound north, where failure nifty mean indescribable suffering and perhaps death. John Kerry, an old time California miner, who has also operated In Alaska and for several years past has been su perintendent of the famous Sunset mine, a" copper proposition In Snohomish county, Wash., lias been In this district a couple of weeks past. Like every one else who visits the region, lie Is greatly pleased with it. He will prospect on his ow Count this summer. The Sumpter Miner Is the recognized exponent of the mining and industrial interests of the EASTERN OREGON GOLD FIELDS. In the Sumpter District It is not only without an equal, but has no rival in quality and quantity of re liable information published every week. Its circulation is already the largest of any paper published in the dis trict, both locally and in other communities and states, and is growing rap idly. As an advertising medium The Miner stands at the head of the list, as its columns demonstrate. Ad vertising, like everything else, is worth little or noth ing if it costs little or noth ing. Patrick Henry, of the celebrated order of preachers, will conduct the mission. Lectures of great ipiportauce will be delivered on the occa sion. It Is hoped that a good attendance will be present to make this, the first mis sion in Sumpter, a great success.
