Wednesday, December 6, 1899 THE SUMPTER MINER. r CITY COUNCIL PROCEEDINGS. Preparing to Fix Water and Light Rates "Cow Ordinance" Ordered Drafted. At the regular meeting of the city coun cil Saturday evening the recorder read communications from a half dozen towns in this state, Idaho and Washington in answer to his enquiries relative to the prices paid for arc lights and water hy drants. This information was ordered to be secured so that equitable rates can be fixed here. The franchise for both light and water privileges provide that the council shall fix this rate. A liquor license was granted to Bellin ger & Ritchie. A warrant for 575 was ordered drawn to pay the city engineer for establishing street grades and property lines. Reports of town officers were read and ordered tiled. A special report from the attorney, who some time since was in structed to examine the books of the re corder and treasurer, was also presented. The report was to the effect that up to November 1 everything was all right, with $967.45 in cash on hand. The coun cil passed a resolution tendering a vote of thanks to town officers. The recorder and attorney were In structed to draft an ordinance prohibiting the running at large of stock within the city limits, with an Impounding penalty. Capital Hotel So'd and Leased. lor some time past Mrs. Tedrowe had an option on the Capital hotel, which ex tends to January 1, 1000. A few days since she took up the bond and paid the price of tlie property, f 3500. It was owned by J. B. Griffin, of Bridgeport, this state, who, of late, has wished to cancel the op tion, the price of all Sumpter business property having advanced so rapidly, but the agreement was In legal form and the deal Is now completed. Mrs. Tedrowe has leased the house for two years to Theodore Kllpatrlck, of Garnet, Montana, who takes possession the fifteenth of this month. Mr. and Mrs. Tedrowe will con tinue to reslJe here, where they have large Interests. They have let the con tract for building two cottages, in Mc H wen's addition, In one of which they will live; but like everyone else, are de layed In their building operations on ac count of the scarcity of lumber. Advertise Sumpter Mines in the East. W. E. Hurd, the well known mining man, Is In the city on his way east from eastern Oregon. Mr. Hurd Is interested in the Chelan group of mines near the Red Boy and also in the Potosi and Sur prise group In the Grenhom. He expects to be gone about a month. While In Chicago he will make an exhibit of Ore gon ores in one of the railway offices. In addition to some of his own best ones, he will take with him samples from the Gol conda and other celebrated mines In east ern Oregon. Portland Telegram. Portland People Coming to Buy. W. C. Calder returned some days since from Portland, to which place he accom panied Governor Mackintosh. He says that Portland people are finally beginning to take an active interest in Sumpter and this mining district. Several men of means, prominent members of the cham ber of commerce and railroad officials sig nified their intention of visiting this camp at an early day, with a view of looking the proposition over and investing if some thing which assays away up Is offered whether It be town lots or mines. Folsom, of Sumpter, at her mother's residence, Baker City, on the 29th ult., at 7:30 in the evening, Rev. George T. Ellis, of the Baptist church, officiating. A wedding supper followed the ceremony. The young lady was one of Baker's charming daughters, it being 'her home from childhood. Mr. Folsom, one of Sumpter's enterprising business j men, was formerly of Whatcom, Wash., ' where he Is well connected and favorably I known. The young couple are keeping ! house here. Will Develop the Josephine. T. C. Culbertson has decided to de velop the Josephine this winter and will in a day or two put a force of men to work on the property. He will drive a 200-foot tunnel, expecting to encounter the main lead at about 150 feet from the mouth. The Josephine was located bv himself last spring, out Golconda way. It has a well defined vein about 3$ feet In width, carrying from six to eight dollars In gold on the surface. Interesting "Old Timer." Richard Penney, one of the early day California miners and prospectors, reached this camp last week, coming from Welser, Idaho, In which vicinity he has been pros pecting the past summer. His principal reason, he says, for coming here was to hunt up his old friend Archie Dowule, with whom he worked In 1855, and whom he has not seen since. The interesting stories of Mr. Penney would make most excellent reading matter were they put In print. Jeweler of Experience. F. C. Brodle, a watchmaker and jeweler of many years of experience, has rented space in the Sumpter Grocery company's store. He was formerlv In the jewelers' supply business at Syac ise, N. Y.; later was employed some time In a leading store in Chicago, and recently has been In busi ness In Goldendale, Wash., where he Is well and favorably known as a man of ex perience in his line. His advertisement is elsewhere to be found in this paper, and he respectfully solicits a share of public patronage. Oil for Bids.
