The chief of police of Madison Wis., submits some figures to prove it. He says that in the last five years 2,605 hoboes who used to frequent his district have disappeared. In 1914 the Madison police station housed 2,820 tramps, in 1919 only 215. The closing of the saloon is one reason given for the vanishing "bo." The saloon with its free lunch counter was the restaurant supreme c f this tribe. Also the cheap lodging house has disappeared in many localities, owing to the in creased cost of living, and the poor tramp no longer can sponge his living from an inebriate and easy-going popu lation. If he wants to eat he must work. Can you beat that for cruel andinhuman punishment r There is another reason for the disappearance of the knights of the road, but it hurts their pride to have it told. Drastic police regulations and a labor shortage during the war put a lot of habitual loafers to work at home or in the army, and they have to like work. It's humiliating, of course, but it s true. The passing of the tramps is a blessing. They were un doubtedly responsible for much petty thievery and small crime, with an occasional crime of greater gravity. More over," their influence upon the youth of the country was not good. It is not well for boys at the restless age to know that there is an army of wanderers who can rove and loaf, and go unhampered by the strong arm of the law. Any agency that has contributed to riding society of these derelicts is a blessing. Those who advocate lightening prohibition restrictions might take this matter under con sideration before demanding too great leniency in the manu facture and sale of liquors. Also, a country and a Congress which have so far con spicuously failed to make good to returned soldiers, even the crippled and maimed, should take heed lest because of their inactivity a new army of wanderers serine ud to sue ceed the old, a body of men restless, disgruntled and disillus ioned; for it was in exactly such conditions following the iivu war tnat tne present vanishing army of tramps had its beginning. o WANTED, COUNTRY DOCTORS! , o " The country doctors are all moving to town, according to a leading medical magazine. Thousands of the smaller communities are without doctors, mere are two reasons for this first, the war, which opened new avenues of useful ness and opportunity to many of the physicians who entered the service; and second, the automobile, which makes it pos sible for the doctor to live in the larger community, keep in touch and compete with the city physicians, and still take care of a large part of his outlying practice. Because of these two factors the little town far from the city suffers without a doctor, or is able to get one only after a long delay and anxiety. To offset this shortage the magazine offers this sugges tion : '"Why shouldn't "some of the city doctors, especially those getting along in years, who feel as if they would like to slow down a little, move into seme of the beautiful country villages, which nowadays have most city comforts and many advantages which the city- does not possess? In such a place a home can be bought for a song, with peace and quiet-, and a garden spot, fresh fruits and beautiful scenery, and an increasing number of people of large ideas, and poetic and literary instincts, and little money." o : Why should England and France insist so solemnly that they intend to repay our war loans? Few Americans have ever done them the discredit of doubting it. o It looks now as if Constantinople won't be "Stamboul" much longer. WHY?
