Maine last fall, had its first open
season on Moos In five year and it
i the opinion of Willi E. Parsons,
Commissioner of Inland Fisheries and
Game, that another open season will
just about extreminate all the Moose
in th Main wood.
Say Mr. Willi in hi report:
"The Moose were increasing and .
were appearing in large numbers in
Washington county and some other big
game counties, but they had not been
hunted for four years and had become
quite tame, apearing often in the set- '
tlements, and have fallen easy prey to
the hunter who had them located for
week before th opening of the sea
ton, i
"The next legislature may deem, it
wise to put another continuous close
time on Moose, if they are to be pre-',
served. One more open season, which
will be had before the next legisla
ture assembles, it is believed will
practically exterminate them. '
- "Our lake and streams, when de- i
pleted, can be restocked, but when
this monarch of the Maine Woods dis
appear, he is gone forever."
What Mr. Pearsons says 'is right.
After a four years' closed season the
Moose are tame, and the longer the
close season the easier it is to kill
them. Moose, like deer where they
are protected for any length of time
become used to seeing hunters and
do not fear them. Then comes an open

season and they walk right up to be
killed.
Thia doesn't teem right. It seems
as if there should b a clot season
long enough to get a goodly number
of Moose in the Maine Woods. It ia
just a th Commissioner says the
lakes and streams can be restocked
but dead Moose cannot be brought
back to life. There can be no pleas
ure in exterminating Moose. Every
true sportsman will and should do hi
best to protect them and see that laws
are provided for that purpose. It la
to be hoped that the kill of Moose will
not be so severe next season.
Deer hunters had a glorious season
in Maine. Eighty-four thousand,
three hundred and thirteen licenses to
residents and 2,657 licenses to non-'
resident were granted which we
might add ia a mighty goodly number-,
for Maine. And these hunters bag-,
ged 6,748 deer, 4,185 of which were
shipped out of the state. Here is what '
the Commissioner has to ssy about
the deer situation:
"Many more deer have been taken
this season than last and nearly twice ,
as many reported at some of the in
spection points as last season. For
instance, at Bangor 1,265 deer and 33
bear were shipped np to November
2C, while the number at the same time
the year previous was 680 deer and
10 bear. These represent but a small
portion of the deer taken in thia sec
tion. I saw 437 deer in one trip of
18 day. "
The bear killed in Maine totaled 146.
Maine i one of the best fishing and
hunting states in the country, and the
trappers think it is a pretty good
state, too. Six hundred and forty-two .
trappers' licenses were granted in
1919.
