MARCH 5 TELEPHONE TROUBLES The real cause of unsatisfactory telephone service has been revealed by a New York telephone operator. She testi fies as follows: "The service is poifect poifect. "Course we girls have our troubles, what with fresh . guys and cranky dames always thinkin' all you hafta do is listen to them tryin' to explain why they thought of the wrong number. "Me give a wrong number? Wheredya get that stuff? The trouble is we've gotta lotta people in this burg who speak the English langwidge like they was drinkin' soup." So there you are! It isn't the company's fault at all, and it isn't the fault of the employees. It's the fault of the public, which is irascible, unreasonable and slovenly in pro nunciation. And since unsatisfactory telephone service seems to be universal, it is to be presumed that the public everywhere else is likewise to blame for the slow response, wrong numbers, etc. Or isn't it? " o THRIFT STAMP WEEK o This week was observed in the public schools of the country as Thrift Stamp week. A week devoted to arousing anew the public interest in these small but safe securities should be of benefit not only to the school children but to their parents also. The finan cial problems confronting the average family at this time are such large ones that it is especially desirable that the habit of small savings, systematically reserved from the income, should not be overlooked. No one who has a small bank into which he drops his odd bits of cash needs to be told how rapidly the small amounts total up. No one who has the habit of investing a Huancr a wcck, or a aay, in a thrift stamp needs to be told now quicKiy ms certificates become something to reckon with as capital. It will be increasingly hard within the next two years ivr most peopie ro ao any saving on a large scale. Children who see their parents systematically through hard times as well as good, and who are encouraged to fol low the example are learning a lesson invaluable through a life time.
