FEBRUARY 14 WATER TRANSPORTATION NEEDED There was an opportunity presented at the Albany Chamber of Commerce yesterday which, if not accepted, wi be due to extreme shortsitedness on the part of the busi ness men cf this city. The officers of the Inland Empire Boat and Truck Company come here asking the business men to invest a small portion of their savings on freight and cartage for one year and will, in return, place two boats in service between Corvallis and Portland. It offers a solution to the car shortage plea and will place a direct barrier upon the transportation lines making an excessive freight charge in the future, l he ertect ot th forced rate as shown between Portland and I angent is we known, and the actual operation of boats will have a furthc .tendency to keep the costs down. The promoters of the enterprise come with a clean-cut proposition and should receive encouragement. A meet ing of the whole Chamber of Commerce will be called soon to take up the matter and every business man in the city should be on hand. A little more concerted action is needed in Albany and here is one good place to start, especially when the individuals and citys pocket books will bene fit thereby. That should be inducement enough to arouse the most lethergiac member of the community. . A SOLDIER'S COMMUNITY HOUSE One of the best things that has be'en proposed in Albany for some time is the active beginning of work towards the securing of a community house and a memorial to the sold iers, sailors and marines of Linn County who served in the great war. As Mrs. Mason aptly expressed it, there were many promises and words of praise for our boys while they were righting and spilling their blood for us over in France, but now that they are nearly all safely home we have been too slow to take steps to carry out our obligations. The American Legion is a live-wire organization, just as any adjunct of the United States Army would be, and is fully capable of getting almost anything it chooses to go after. But can they be expected to solicit funds; or even suggest a memorial for themselves? Such a building, solidly built, would serve as a lasting monument to the men who served in the greatest of wars and fill a present need of the city and county. The cost would not be great. We have raised many times the amount needed in relief drives, and a small con tribution on the part of every citizen in the county would do the work. Subscriptions have already been received and many more people are ready to come forward. The matter has been smouldering for some time and It but remained for Mrs. Mason to start the ball rolling. Now that it has bven started the matter should not be allowed to rest until the end is attained and sufficient funds have been subscribed to erect a creditable building.
