Victor Berger, refused admittance to Congress again,
declares:

ernment ever witnessed in this country. It is really a full
denial of the right of the people to elect the citizen as their

Berger and his defenders make the fundamental mis
take of assuming that he has beeu-barred from membership
in Coneress because he is a Socialist. This is absurd. He
himself served a term in the House of Representatives as
a declared Socialist, without question. So did Meyer Lon
don of New York. What Berger.has .tje.ri. barred for is not
Socialism, but crime. ,

, in a letter to President V. L. Camp
bell from Bear Admiral H. A. Field,
commandant of the Puget Sound navy
yard. The letter states that in com
pliance with requests from the head
of the University for a souvenir from
the battleship Oregon, they are send
ing one. of the smalled guns which
that ship mounted In the Spanish
American war. , ' .
The piece, which is rich in historical
interest, is to be suitably Inscribed by
the navy department and shipped pre
paid to the University. No particular
spot on the campus has been selected
for its erection as the size of the gun 1
is not known, and it was thought bet
ter to wait ant) see it before making
