PHONE 96 ALBANY, OREGON, FRIDAY, JANUARY 16 CENSORING SHAKESPEARE The annual campaign against Shakespeare's "Merchant of Venice" is on again, with the racial batteries turned against high schools and playhouses. There is nothing new in the arguments they are mere ly the old objections that it is unfair to study this play in school or present it in public, because Shylock is not repre sentative of his race, and it arouses prejudices against the Jews in general. A novel light has been thrown on the controversy, however, by the action of the Scottish Veter - ans of the World War, in Newark, N. J. This organization Comment of the State Press Snappy Gleam ings froea Press of the Valley Us Students as Beggars The great old state of Oregon is alt right, but we do, or permit to be done, some very foolish thingss. For instance, we have a University down at Eugene. It is recognised as a good school . No one would part with it for anything. And yet, in order to gut sufficient buoldings to operate in the most efficient way, we are forc ing the boys and girls who love their school, to go out over the state as beggars and raise ' money to erect buildings. Either we do not need that Univer sity and should close it up or we should support it in a way that it will not be handicapped for buildings. That fact is patent to every fair minded citixen. HOMESICK By Guy Fitch Phelps Too Much Parolllng The governor's recommendation that the parole law be suspended with regard to crimes against the person will not please everyone, but it is in asks the board of education to droo "Macbeth" from the pD'e p0'". curriculum if the "Merchant of Venice" is dropped, on the SZJTTi ground that the portrayal of Macbeth as a murderer and aj crimes of violence. Register. traitor is a libel on the Scottish people. A sarcastic New York reporter, writing up the matter, remarks that the board has not yet received resolutions from the Moors asking the elimination of "Othello," or from the Danes denouncing the study of "Hamlet." There is a better case against Shakespeare's Shylock, no doubt, than against any other of his characters. Still.! Lost in the daze and dim. Please allow me a little s-tace your valuable paper to express views on a certain article which sp pearod In the Albany Herald the 12th Inst., under the caption, "Mr. Bryan's Position." The world knows Mr. Bryan; not only knows him, but knows that be i a man of fearless character and acts with a clear eonsienc and absolutely independent in thought. For such a man I have the utmost regard and respect. But that doesnt say that he' is always right, as a matter of fact the American people think lie is sometimes wrong, and I am inclined to think that this Is one of the times when he urges compromise upon thr League of Nations Treaty. However, let that be as it may, that is not the point I care so much to discuss. The editor of the Herald seems to get nearly all questions by the wrong horn, and because of his biased opin ions and his extreme political prvju diced inclinations he gets vory far from the truth of the question in hand. It is true that such men as Lodge. Johnson, Borah, Poindexter and ott ers have been playing politics with this great question, and have mis-represented their constituents in this re gard. My opinion is you can take all of them and boil them down until you get the residuum essence of true Americanism and then you will not have one-half the volume that there ia to be found in President Wilson. The article above mentioned has this to say: "The administration has worked i through civil and religious organiga I tions to try to whip the nation into the league." I think such a statement could not be farther from the truth, and no sensible man or woman would believe it for a second. Again he says, "Mr. Bryan is the first democratic leader to express a sensible suggestion for the past eight years." There is one fsct which is apparent to all fair minded people, a fact which is fundamental, that is, ones horixon, or sweep of vision ia only to the ex tent of their comprehension, conse quently, when ones mental faculties become so befogged that they fail to comprehend the truth or sea the light of justice, then it is that they are wallowing around in a quagmire of misaprehenaion and undiscernablv truth, and fail to see the virtues and good in a man like our worthy Presi dent, Wood row Wilson. J. A. LAWRENSON. Albany, Oregon, Jan. 14, 1920. An inch of rain means that one hundred and one tons of water have l fallen upon every acre of soil. The latest development in the war-reparation scheme is to make Germany restore to France 26,000 dogs stolen from occupied French territory. This request is made by the French Ministry of Agriculture, to supplement the demands already made, and allowed, for horses, cattle and other do mestic animals. It is not expected that the animals actually taken can be returned, save n exceptional casess. The own ers, however, insist on dogs "just as good." If the reparation commission uoholds this unprecedent ed demand, it will certainly create an odd situation. The !
