PHONE W ALBANY, OREGON, SATURDAY JANUARY 10 PLAIN TRUTH FOR RADICALS There has been much complaint from American Reds, particularly those of the "parlor" variety, on account of the severe measures lately taken to rid the country of disturbers. There have been sgme outbursts of foolish sentimentality, too, and some misapplied arguments regarding "free speech and a "free press", from people who are at heart good Ameri cans but a bit week in the heart or head. It is good, there fore, to find Cardinal Gibbons of Baltimore, with his usual directness and simplicity, going straight to the heart of the matter and putting the whole case in a nutshell. i ne foreigners wno come to our shores, ne says, are given every opportunity to earn an honest living. Their en vironments here are much better than they had at home, and the authorities give them every assistance possible to make them useful citizens of this grand country. The laws here are not as hard to obey as those they had to contend with in their former countries; but the foreigners must remem ber that they must obey the laws of this country as our own people have to obey thdm." He concludes: "If the members of the Red organiza tions don't like this country, let them go home. If they do not go, then we shall have to send them." That is exactly what we are doing now, after long tol erance of their insolent and pernicious activity. Some fault-fjnders perhaps will challenge the Cardinal's statement that the authorities have given these malcontents "every assistance possible to make them useful citizens." There have, indeed, been omissions along this line in the past, though they are now -being reminded. It should not be forgotten, however, that even when official America seemed most indifferent to the welfare of immigrants, she was infinitely more kind to them than their own govern ments at home had been. Comment of the State Press Snappy Gleamlnga from the Preaa of the , Valley Without a Kick in It By A. J Both Right Cottage Grove Sentinel The way it appears to us is that the commission had all the grounds necessary upon which to Are Mr. Finley and that the governor has all the grounds necessary for dispensing with the srevices of the fish and game commissioners and all he has to dot to And good and sufficient cause ia toj hold up to public view the extravag-i ant conduct of the business of the office. Third Time is Charm The voters of Oregon have twice voted legalised murder out of the State, and there are enough sana and sensible people to do it again, in spite of the social reds who seek to destroy the good name of the state, at least. Lend-a-Hand, of the Penitentiary, Salem, thinks so. Vocab. Club MUSICAL COMEDY: 1 Some thing neither musical nor funny. 2 A three-ring disclosure. Make Use of Electric Service for Washing No Confidence In Commission The affairs of the fish and game commission have been in mora or less turmoil for years with quarrels, dis sension and near-scandals that have lost it what little respect the people of the state ever had for it If Gov- ernor Olcott can purge this body of its maladorous repute ha will accom plish a real reform, declares the Aur ora Observer. If "it can't be done," some one will come along one of these days with an initiative bill that will blow up the whole mess. I Penitentiary for 15-Year-Old Girl THE TREASURY CREED It is a good creed suggested by the United States Treas ury Department for the new year. The chief items are : "I believe in the United States of America. "I believe that her stability and progress rest on the thrift and'industry of her people. "Therefore I will work hard and live simply. "I will spend less than I earn.', "I will save consistently. "To increase the financial strength of my country and myself, I will buy government securities." It need not be objected that this creed is "purely materi alistic." There is more than materialism in work and thrift, particularly when they are meant for national advancement as well as personal advancement. With hard work, plain living and high purpose, there will be far more chance for spiritual uplift than there has been with the shiftlessness, thriftlessness and purposelessness of the past year. o The income tax blanks will soon be sent out. Then 4, 000,000 families will have solved for them the problem of how to spend the long winter evenings.
