River Transportation Hoped
for Soon to Cut Freight
Costs
That Albany may have better ship
ping facilities at a lower rate of
transportation and with truck haul
ing freight Into Albany and Corval
lis is stated by the last issue of the
Gazette Times as follows:
It is not improbable that the people
of Corvalis will soon hear the tooting
of the Ore gone snd Pomona as those
well-known vessels ply the raging
Willamette on regular trips as far
up the river as Hsrirsburg, and con
necting with the Rose City at the oth
er end of the line.
According to announcement in the
Portland p peers, a new company has
been formed to take over the holdings
of the Oregon City Transportation
Company, this to be known as the In
land Empire Boat & Truck Company,
and it is reputed that the company,
which is filing articles of incorpora
tion today, will operate a truck ser
vice from each station touched by its
boats. 1
Th Incorporators are: J. A. Smith,
William J. Mariner, both of Gillia
county; E. W. Haines of Washington
county; Captain A. B. Graham, M.
E. Lee and M. M. Lee of Portland.
Steamers to Burn Oil
The steamers are to be fitted as oil i
burners immediately and It is hoped !
to commence operations by the first of
March. The Oregona and Pomona
will be operated on the Willamette
river and the Grahamona and another
steamer on the Columbia will go to:
Pajsco and Kennewick and those op
erating on the Willamette will go up
as far as ilarrisburg when possible,
making Salem during all months of
the year, Mr. Lee said.
The truck service will operate out
of all the important points touched
by th steamers, according to Mr. Lee.
Present plana Include the operation
of trucks out of Corvallis, Albany,
Salem and Dayton on the Willamette.
On the Columbia there will be a truck
circuit Including Goldendale, Brickle
ton, Roosevelt, Arlington, Wasco,
Grass Valley and Moro., and another
including Umatilla, Pendleton, Walla
Walla, Pasco and Kennewick.,
. Captain Graham Manager
Mr. Lee declares thst a . freight

thos districts. ,
