In th meantime other papers west of th "Allegheney Mountain had - tabtished th Western Associated Press, and gradually other Associated Presa association wr formed a th country grew. The prut form of the association date from 1900, when th old organisation wa prac tically dissolved and a thoroughly mutual organisation effected. The recent report of Melville E. Stone, general manager, shows that the association spent in gathering news in 1918 but a few thousand dol lars U-ss than four million. The splendid servk of the association during th war baa served to increase still further the confidence of the American public in the Associated Press, "and hereafter the American people may not believe that a Pope ia dead, a Presidential election settled or a war ended until th Associated Press say so." The Associated Press is accurate in its reports. Every telegram of the Associated Press is subjected to such a degree of censorship aa to make untruthful or biased reports practically impossible. - By virtu of its wide membership embracing news papers of all shades of political faith and industrial and socialogical thought, Th Associated Press is necessarily non-sectional and commit ted to a policy of th strictest irnpats iality and nonpartisanship. Political events are handled simply from a news standpoint without expressions of editorial opinion or ting of par tisan coloring. Albany deserve both of th two big press services, which act aa a protection against premature reports, such aa th United Press report that th armistice was signed on Nov. 8, three days before the signature was affixed to the document. It gives the people an opportunity to weigh big news reports of national events and to get views from both angles. The United Press is a splendid organisa tion, composed of live, energetic men. snd its Western representatives are all fine fallows. - But its service is not as reliable or as efficient as the Associated Press.
