Tht American Federation of Labor
has wisely decided to oppose the
fomwtioo of a definite labor party
in this country. The decision is in
. line with tho history and traditions
of the federation itself, which has
long ftoijrht to accomplish its alms
by exerting its influence within (the
Misting parties rather than setting
- up a separate organization.
Its policy is harmonious, too, with
the general spirit of the country. Ev
cry attempt ever made toward a jpo
liticsJ group along purely industrial
or economic lines has failed. The so

along pretty well in some other coun
tries with their own parties England

tho greater opportunity existing in

Most American workmen do not
seem to feel any such sense of class
. spirit as is felt abroad. They think
of themselves not as a limited group
of workers, but as self-respeqting
members of society in general. Thos
they are willing to entrust their in
terests to parties including many
other groups besides theirs. And to
the credit of the big parties it must
be said that, in general, they justify
- this faith to the satisfaction of the
working people.
Just as long as they continue to do
that, the working people will remain
with them, recognizing that their in
terests run parallel to the interests
of the big public of which they are
part
