Hofer. in his Manu facturer, a trade Journal published at Salem, took the matter up and the few lork Times reprints the Manu facturer's story about dors. Read thi and decide if you want this kind of advertising to continue: "Orefron newspapers have boasted that in the City of Albany they have the very ultimate in "slow" towns The Manufacturer, published at Salem. aays of it: " The town was actually too quiet for a Presbyterian college to live and churches have been forced to consoli date or go out of business. Children are still produced by the poorer class- es, but its streetcar line was pulled up some years ago. It has been strontr for Chautauquas and Three-finfrered-Jack revivals, but even they have been running behind for lack of interest. In old days saloons helped a little aad the town had a brewery and farmers and loggers came in from the country and once in a while the City Marshal had something to do and someone got into jail. But the jail is permanently clos ed and the Elks' Club is the only wicked place tn town. However, there is a limit to all things, and when Albany took a refer endum on the question of prohibiting dogs on the street, the citizens had a noisy campaign over the issue and voted it down. The dogs have now taken hold of life with renewed zest and are disporting themselves with new zeal. The citizens are still talk ing over the election, and it looks like the dog issue has put the place back on the map. There is talk of holding an election to vote bonds for a new engine house, and a Citizens' Commit tee is at work on the project of re pairing the sidewalks. Albany hit the bottom, and is on the upgrade, probab ly due to the stimulation of municipal life by the dog issue. Seattle Post Intelligencer. Albany has more serious work to do than entertaining the outside world with iueh rot At the head of the Chamber of Commerce is a man with broad business experience, sound fore sight, energy and a determination to do things for the betterment of the city. Krank J. Miller thoroughly be lieves in the future of I.inn county and is working for a bigger and bet ter Albany. If the promoters of freak legislation will devote their eneryie to helping Mr. Miller, Albany will ill deed be all that he hopes to make il. I. inn county is off with a big leaf today on the last lap of paying for her share of the war debts. Not pay ing for them, but loaning Uncle Sam a little gob of the necessary nioiu-y at a good rate of interest and unJer piosl favorable conditions. The thought of the fact that 60.000 Americans died in France, and that 1W.000 more would have died before this time had not the armistice been signed, is go ing to have a mighty big influence with many people who put patriotism before dollars. Mrs. Dorris Visits - Mrs. Ellen Dorris, one of the prom inent pioneers of Albany, is in the ity this week visiting relatives and old friends. Corvallis Visitor Mrs. O. MiddlekaurT of Corvallis is visiting at the home of Mrs. M. J. Peery of West Sixth street today. Went to Portland C. H. Jessee, of the Blain Clothing company, attended the big airplane ex hibition in Portland today. Farmer From Orteana Everett Young, one of the oldest farmers of Orleans, spent the day in the city transacting business. President Lee Returns Pres. Wallace Howe Lee returned this morning after filling his appoint ments at Eugene yesterday. He re ports good interest with 34 new mem bers yesterday. Scio Pioneer Seriously 111 Nathan loung, one of the leading pioneers of Scio. is reported seriously ill, with little hope of recovery. 400 Carloads of Ties Railroad men in commenting on the large number of ties being shipped through Albany, state that 400 car loads have been delivered at Eugene.
