Specifically a re ligious season, there is much about the customs usual to its observance which people of any creed or reliirion can follow with benefit. What Lent calls for from those who keep it as a sacred duty is a refresh in? of mind and body by simple living and quiet thinking. Whether people be of a creed which believes in the observance of Lent or not. a simplified diet will be (rood for them. Any system needs a rest from t'le hearty foods of winter, and the replacing of a meat diet with one con listing largely of preen vegetables. One may not want to (ro to church 7iat is his own concern. But it mu'l do anybody pood to turn from harass ing and perhaps bitter thoughts to quieter meditations and to the com pany of pood and restful literature. After winter with many nights of late hours, and always a period of nervous strain, early to bed will restore rapid ly the shattered nerves. Take it all in all, though Lent as a relipious fact may mean nothinp. Lent as a period of forty days devoted to setting body and mind in order is well worth anybody's while. g House cleaning time. SPEAKING OF HOLES "The United States senate decided that it was necessary ti "put the President in a hole" wit'. .iis league of nation plan, and did n to its own satisfaction. That is ncv a matter of history, praiseworthy or unpraisewor thy, as events may prove. It happens at the same time that the New York Tribune prints a striking cartoon, en titled "The League of Nations Argu ment in a Nutshell." It is drawn af ter Batrnsfather's famous picture, "The Better 'Ole." President Wilson and congress are represented as standing together in a 7 TALK about smokes. But then, it was a peace conference. A lot of jewelry was missed by the owners. Search revealed it in a hen's nest, with the hen setting on it. Once more we see the evil of inflammatory literature; that hen had probably been reading about the goose that laid the golden egg.
